Is this corn smut?

I had some of the corn in my garden in years past blow out with smut....I think...can anyone confirm?  At first I thought something insane happened to it, but upon further review I think it might be parasitic fungi.

You know i was watching bizzare foods today and they mentioned corn smut,Andrew Zimmern said it tasted like truffles.  First time hearing about it, just researched it a few hours ago, go figure.  :popcorn:

at first I thought it was some weird insect infestation and i was a bit terrified when I saw it...then I figured it might have been bacterial or some genetic freak...I heard about corn smut a few months back and thought I'd dig up my old pic and see if anyone here could confirm it.

I can't remember..it was too long ago...and it looked so f'in nasty I was kinda concerned some huge nasty insect would explode out of it...

Looks like Corn Smut to me. Corn Smut is a parasite.

yes that is corn smut for sure, Ustilago is considered a delicacy by some.

I have only had it once but it was delicious.  That looks good to me.  I am thinking about trying to inoculate some of my fathers corn next summer.  I may go as far as buying some heirloom corn that I read is prone to smut and planting it away from the rest of his crop just for this purpose.  I have big dreams and little time so who knows if I ever will.

Does smut fungi grow on agar plates?  Who has a source of cultures for it?

How did you cook it up?

I know it is out there.  Others are doing the same thing.  I assume it would grow on agar but I think they sell spores to inoculate the corn with.

OK, past tense.  I thought that you still had a sample to work with.

For my part, I find that I am taking spores to agar for most anything I find.

I have a secontid agaric, and a puffball that I found locally on agar.
...no idea what I am going to do with them yet.

Ustilago maydis, or huitlacoche as it is called by the Mexicans is used as a filling in quesadillas, ask Alan how it tastes!
