Huitlacoche - corn smut - corn mushroom
    #23469575 - 07/23/16 02:56 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Anybody out there have the culture for huitlacoche!? i have read a few posts here on this so called corn smut, people have found it, eaten it, yet not grown it out on agar. SO does anyone have or have access to Ustilago maydis culture? the last thread i saw looking for this culture was in '07, so hopefully there is something new here.

how about successful cultivation stories?

Wait for sweet corn to come in then head to a local farmers market and ask a vendor to bring you some, you can get spores from the dark/black mushrooms.  I understand huitlacoche is grown commercially by nicking the stalks of young corn plants with knives covered in spores, but I'm not sure of the actual technique.  I'm sure it's well documented, they grew it for centuries in Mexico

I live in Canada and there is only one cultivator in the entire country, a university doing research on its cultivation. I've read in mexico it is big and the US has a large niche market and some few cultivators. Fortunatley i do live in the same town as the university and even graduated from there, sadly its seriously locked up and the research field fenced in securely...SO again canadian cultivators are behind and have to face these types of hurdles every so often. Hoping someone out there has some on agar, give me some hope of one day acquiring this and becoming the first, or second, major producer in Canada!

In the US you need special dispensation from the government to grow it, it's considered a plant pathogen.

You gotta read up on the life cycle, like most plant pathogens it has different stages with different # of chromosomes and reproduction.  I don't think the mycelium you grow on agar is very effective.  Like someone said I think it's spores in the soil that infect.

I recently looked into it. There are a few scholarly articles about it. They make LC's and inoculate down the tip of the corn with a squirter of sorts. Timing in the corn growth cycle and time from inoculation sounded like they were really critical.

sounds like quitter talk to me.. do they not have bolt cutters in canada? :hehehe:

what about hanging a cloth of some description downwind of this field when they are sporulating? makes some cuts in some corn and rub the cloth on them.

maybe there;s some mexicans that can grow it easily, but it seems people that want to grow it in america are tight lipped if they actually can do it.

we get this stuff on our corn and don't even try. taste great simmered with garlic, chili and cream. i am the only one who eats it so i don't promote it much. it seems to me that the spores make contact with the young silks and that is how it spreads.

I didn't even know this stuff was edible, seen photos but never knew. I'm interested now, i love the idea of something that looks nasty but tastes good.

Deffinitely read up on it's life cycle, I cannot remeber it well but i once read a detailed description of the life cycle that would tell you more or less what is likely to work.

I will learn as much as i can about the life cycle...

http://people.trentu.ca/~barrysaville/reports/strategic-foundation-for-huitlacoche.pdf
here is some info on huitlacoche in Canada and the research being done at Trent University.

http://www.mycologia.org/content/95/6/1261.abstract
here is another article on huitlacoche, focused on production. it is from 13 years ago but still useful.

If anyone has other resources on this please share!

Reconnaissance Report: The experimental field at Trent university used to cultivate huitlacoche in the summer/fall of 2015 has not been sowed with corn seed or anything this year. I just went by the university to check. I'm trying to find Dr. Saville, the microbiologist working on the project, at the school to find out if they rotated the field to maintain fertility or something.

will update when more info available.

So i received my culture in the mail the other day from the ebay thread above. The agar is really dried out and there is a contam on it...shitty, but i'll have to work with it. going to  get it split into 10 - 15 different agar plates; once I have have trade market access it will be offered.

Ive had some really dry agar wedges, hard like little rocks. They swell up within hours of putting them on fresh plates though and so far never lost one.

Kinda shitty to get it like that off ebay though, I'd probably contact the seller with photos.

Ebay eh? I was looking at buying that. Lame product you seem to have received. Hopefully it swells back up like weetsie said. I'm very interested in trading for it if that works out. Nice work.
