normal-pressure sterilization
    #4176094 - 05/14/05 08:18 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

anyone ever heard of this? i read about it a bit on mushworld... some farms are using it for shitake blocks and the such... you do it by steaming the area for 12+ hours or something like that..
any other info out there? how to set something up? how do you create steam??

Mr. Mattymonkey, I think they have an old word for that:

Pasteurization.

I won't sterilize anything, but in some cases can be good enough to kill off most of the bad guys. Pasteurizing is good enough for, say, milk. Steam in most cases is generated via boilers heating the water to superheated (higher than 212F) and then the pressurized steam is released into the enclosure. The enclosure needs to get above about 170 to pasteurize. Kinda like the hot water bath for straw cultivation. Similarly, the longer temps are required to break down organisms and spores that could take that temp for just a few minutes.

Yes, on MushWorld there are pretty specific directions about how exactly to do it.

Examples:
Oyster mushrooms:
http://www.mushworld.com:1508/oversea/view.asp?cata_id=5170&vid=6658

* Substrate material mixing and Bag filling
197kg of raw material, including cottonseed hull pellet 150kg, beet meal 30kg, cottonseed meal 15kg, charcoal powder 2kg, were mixed with 350 liter of water for 3~4 hours at each mixing. 1,600 substrate bags were prepared by four times of mixing.

* Sterilization
One sterilization after two mixing, totally mixed the materials four times and sterilized two times. Low-pressure sterilization by covering the bags that stacked on the outdoor sterilization frame with plastic sheet, blanket and silver mat, then, keeped at 98oC for 6 hours with electric steam boiler.

Shiitake:

http://www.mushworld.com:1508/oversea/view.asp?cata_id=5120&vid=6891

After substrate materials thoroughly mixed with additives and water, plastic bags are filled with substrate by bagging machine. The bags are about 40cm long and 2kg. Then the bags are arranged for sterilization (left).

To prevent falling down of bags, growers tie with strings or put bags into sacks and pile them (below). When the bags are ready, the pile is covered by plastic cover and steam is injected into the plastic cover. The bags are sterilized at 100??C for 8~10 hours. Temperature is checked inside plastic cover not substrate temperature. It usually takes more than 10 hours to increase the air temperature inside plastic cover up to 100??C.

So how long should it take to functionally sterilize hardwood kiln dried plywood chips using steam? Also did anyone see how they were making the steam in china? I do have a kerosene worm worksite heater. But isnt steam wet heat a much more effecient carrier of heat than dry heat? what is a good source of an inexpensive boiler. Dry cleaners? Hospitals? or as I have queried in another thread, a commercial wallpaper steamer?

I am in the same boat. A commercial autoclave is entirely out of my league yet I need to sterelize large amoounts of material. Please check the other thread going on using horizontal freezers and steam.
