Maybe bitter, maybe not. You seem to be projecting a closing of doors onto your friends and family though, which "energetically speaking" would flow back negatively.
Though they should understand that "A well overflowing will eventually run dry."
Do what you need to do man, you have the oars to your own boat to deal with.

Dude I understand that, Im a skilled tradesman doing hvac-r and electrical so everyone is my friend all in a sudden when their shits broken and they cant afford the real going rate of a skilled mechanic. When i move to a new place i actually try not to tell people what i do for a living for this purpose. You might think this would be lucrative side work for me but its hardly ever worth the hassle after they want the friend price. Where do you live brother? You mentioned doing some remodeling do you know any skilled trades? Here in Denver believe it or not construction is booming like crazy and break neck speed i doubt theres anyone in the skilled trade unemployed unless they want to be. I'm doing an apprenticeship at the IBEW electrical union, good pay and benefits man their always looking for people its something to consider if you live in a state where there is even a small or medium size union presence is go there to the union hall and try to get in they are desperate for people to switch over to union.

as a person who, in the past, made himself readily available and willing to help people out, which ALWAYS resulted in being taken advantage of then gulit-tripped, unsuccessfully, until i was forced to say "NO!", i'm going to tell you you are doing nothing wrong.
YOU should be your priority. people might call you selfish. fuck them. they're being selfish thinking their life/problem is in any way more important than yours. your life is your life, their lives are their lives. YOU ARE #1 (unless you have children, then you are #1.5)
do what is best for you, then make time for others as you can/see fit

All of us are in search of God whether we know it or not. God is not a religious figure but a state of mind we achieve through ridding ourselves of our egos. A job is not important unless we are dependent of other people in some way. When we choose to offer someone advice and expect that it will be accepted then we accept our action as a failure. Being admired as a guidance couselor of some sort often results in pride and is of th 7 deadly sins that breed an ego. In order to find balance, we must expect nothing in life and learn to accept all things that happen. When we are resented for our action or lack of action, it is not by ones self but by an ego that controls the consciousness. we have no reason to be offended by a creation of mind that is equivalent to a cartoon character. everyone gets exactly what they deserve, and not by fate and karma, as fate is a way of victimizing ones self in order to place blame somewhere other than ourself, but by the choices we make. Anyone whochooses to point the finger is indeed the selfish one. Most often when we criticize someone,it is our ego attacking the true self in order to further manifest within the consciousness. any form of judgement is hypocritical as division is the ultimate illusion and we are everything
