First timer log. GT & B+

From everything I read, I was planning on just leaving the jars for a week and not checking up on them. Excitement and anticipation got the best of me and I looked anyways, expecting to be disappoint. I was kind of blown away to see the progress of this after only 2 days, especially after reading other peoples GT logs claiming they didn't see anything start for weeks.




Maybe its just kicking my ass for not having the terrarium ready.

Opted out of making my own substrate for the first time.

the GTs are about twice as colonized as the B+s at this point. GT is pictured.

Take the foil off man. That's why you have a verm barrier in place to trap comtams.

Thank you for noticing and making the suggestion. I read that in another thread a day or two ago and went to go pull the foil off but I feel a little conflicted.

It needs to be noted that I did NOT make these. I got them "ready to go". I'm not sure what kind of verm layer it has on top, if any, and a couple of them looked like they were rocked around pretty hard in shipping so I don't know if that compromised the verm barrier. I just moved and don't have a functioning kitchen yet so this route was better for me. Once these are birthed, i'll be making my own.

The foil is basically just floating over the lid very loose. This is what the instructions the jars came with said to do so I opted to go that route.

Only reason I'm tempted to leave the foil on is because of how much progress they've made with them on so far. Maybe I'll go ahead and remove it from the ones that aren't as far along to see what happens.

Is too fast of growth a sign of improper GE?

it isnt a gas exchange issue, the real problem is that it traps moisture and this causes your verm barrier to become damp which can wick contams, it is important to let that verm barrier breathe so to speak and throw whatever instructions you are reading out, foil is for the sterilizing process...thats it.

Seems as if the growth has been paused for 2 days since I removed the foil and got the temp down from 85 to 78. With the foil on and higher temps I was noticing gains throughout the day.

Don't feel discouraged....pint size cakes stall very frequently under the best conditions...not calling you crazy but it might be also be all in your head that they have paused....taking the foil off was the best move and 85 external is too high.....just stay calm and you got this.

Thanks for your words of reassurance. I feel like the high temp is what caused such rapid growth and realize it also increases the chance of contamination so its probably a good thing that the process has slowed down... and I still haven't built my SGFC anyways.

Unrelated question.. when I first started researching this process, I seen a lot of stuff about "bruising" the mycelium from even water droplets hitting it during the misting. With it appearing highly sensitive, how does the dunk and roll process not bruise it? How does rinsing it off under the faucet not bruise it, but misting it "too hard" might?

I feel like I missed something along the way to be confused about this.

Blue bruising is going to scare you the first time...,it happens for several reasons...getting touched...being dry....harvest stress....sometimes it goes away other times it stays....it's all about being able to recognize blue bruising and contam

The GTs started off faster than the B+, but it appears the B+ have passed them. These are the most advanced jars. B+ on left GT on right.

Does this apply to grains also?  Should there be GE for grain jars during colonization?
