GT Casing -- 17 days and no joy (Update!)
    #4094725 - 04/25/05 12:28 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hey, everybody -- this is my first post here -- and I'm hoping to get some good advice.  A FOAF of mine knocked 4 pf-style jars with the Golden Teacher strain about two months ago.  At first, they colonized great -- in fact, she might have let them colonize a little TOO much (when she birthed em, they were snow white and fluffy, in some spots almost rubbery).  Anyway, she dunked one and cased it with vermiculite top and bottom.  Again, it looked good.  The myc. started growing again, and all looked well (still does, still smells good -- no sign of contams) -- BUT, it's been 17 days and no pins.  She mists and fans three times a day, and uses perlite humidification.  Also, she's left it out at night the past two nights (temps going down to the 50's) -- as sort of a cold shock.  It gets 12 hours of sunlight per day.  What is she going wrong?  Is GT THAT hard to get to fruit?  Will the thing EVER pin?  Help, please...   Thank you!!!

Here's a pic:

I would suggest more fresh air exchange.

Could also be some kind of hidden contam. What is your average tempature?

Thanks, agar -- I'll tell her to fan more -- and yes, I was sitting here watching for replies! *lol* Do you think leaving it out at night is a good idea? (should she continue to do so?) -- does it look too wet/dry? Do you think it will still fruit at all at this point?

Well, the average temp during the day is between 70 and 80 degrees. Usually right around 75. At night, it gets down to about 50. Is there any way to tell if you've got a hidden contam?

A hidden comtam often gives off a funky sock smell. Your tray looks good. There is just some pinning trigger missing. Otherwise that baby should have pinned by now. Does the tray feel as heavy as when you started it - off? The substrate could be a bit dry, but doesn't look like it is.

50 @ night, every night, will not be helpfull.

I fruit between 66 (occasional lowest) and 78 (occ. highest). Normally between 68-75.

GT once took 9 days with these temps. 17 days then something is wrong.

How do you fan? Coldschocking hasnt been needed sofar, and yours seem to have had enough coldshock now, anyway.

I would say:
keep minimum temps higher. Between 69-75 is close to ideal.
fan more/better

MF

Yep to much cold shocking will slow things down...I'd also stick with your temps in the normal range at this point. Good luck and increase fresh air exchanges. If you can get a fish pump with a couple air wands under that perlite, you'll have alot more fresh air..

But the casingtub is very deep SMR, I think that a bubble wand in the main terrarium will not refresh the air inside the casing tub, enough...

I even fan by hand now and then when there is an inch, or 2, between the top of the casingtub and the top of the casinglayer.

Well of course hand fanning should still continue, the edges do fit in very tightly....but air is still air and an airpump will give her more of it...

Actually, I think I may have just relized something else. That container looks like a shoe box style like this:

And if thats the case...the substrate level is WAY to thin. You need at LEAST 1 inch of SUBSTRATE. And in one of those containers I know it take a quart to get that much...if you only case one cake in there you probably have a very very very thin network going on of about 1/3 of an inch thick (the bottom and top casing layers dont count).

Thanks, everybody, for your help.

Scatmanray: do you think there's any way I could get more substrate in there, or do you think I just need to give it up and start over?

I would start over for sure...dont toss it until you need the space though. You may still get some fruits from it..

if u have 50 degrees at night then i would put a heating pad on a low or medium setting under the terrarium to heat it up a little at night and turn it off during the day.

Pins, glorious pins!!!! *do the happy snoopy dance* -- and they're little fatties, too. Thanks for your help, everybody! There are probably about 80 on there right now. So, one question -- do I still mist and fan?
