First monotub grow - over 1 lb of dried mushrooms (full description of grow method) * 1
    #23066513 -

*This method produced over 1 pound of dried mushrooms with 3.5 quarts of spawn*

I decided to post my grow here as it's my first monotub, and my first grow in 10 years or so. I will update with pics and note the total final weight. I really appreciate everyone's help on this forum, especially Damion5050, RogerRabbit, FrankHorrigan, and Pastywhyte. I read through all 162 pages of Damion's post and learned a lot (was reminded of a lot), and really appreciate all the user contributions. Critiques and constructive criticism are welcomed.

How I got it done:

1) Prepare your grains

I used Roger's tek on rye grain prep
The only thing we noticed with this video is Roger says to use 10 cups for 10 quart jars, we found this to be pretty insufficient, we found 10 cups filling up only 5 quarts jars to 2/3 full, so use 20 cups for 10 quart jars instead of 1 cup per quart. Also concerning the lids of the jars, you will see if you scroll through the thread that I use poly-fil in my lids, Roger discusses how this is prepared in the video. You can use just a drop of spores from a multispore syringe purchased online for each jar, some users use 1/4 of a CC, some use 1 CC. I inoculated my grain jars after they cooled to room temperature after pressure cooking for 1 hour at 15 PSI. I stuck the needle (after flame sterilizing) through the poly-fil so that the grains are not exposed to open air.

Read this thread to learn about spores: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21365919/fpart/1/vc/1

2) Prepare the substrate

I used the Damion5050 tek for the foundation: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595/fpart/1/vc/1

I only used 3.5 quarts of rye grain instead of the 5 quarts that Damion uses and had full colonization in less then 10 days. Instead of using the trash bag I duck taped all of the 6 holes and put the lid on loosely. I also gave the tub indirect light for 12 hours on and 12 hours off while it was colonizing.

Also I used 1 cup of powered gypsum. I boiled the gypsum on the stove with my 4-5 quarts of water and poured the water on top of the coir/verm mixture in the bucket. I highly recommend cutting/ripping the coir into small little pieces prior to pouring your 4-5 quarts on top in the bucket. I heated the 4-5 quarts of water to 190 degrees before taking off of the stove and immediately pouring it over the verm/coir. Apply the lid and let it sit for 1 hour. Come back and stir in 1 hour, then apply the lid until the bucket has cooled to room temperature. Add the contents in the bucket to your 5 quarts of spawn in your tub and level it. Apply the poly-fil (details below) and put the tub into its fruiting area with 12 hours on/off schedule.

*Note* Pastywhyte uses 5 quarts of water (instead of 4 that Damion uses), 3 quarts of vermiculite (opposed to 2 quarts that Damion uses), one 650g brick of coir, and 5-6 quarts of spawn. This is how I prepared my second tub found on page 5 of this thread.

Here is the link for some coco coir (there are many sources for this):

3) Prepare the tub

Once the substrate was fully colonized I used Frank's tek on how to properly dial in your monotub:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17332777

The 6 holes in my monotub are 1.5" in diameter. I cut the lid in the center (scroll through the thread to see the pictures) and applied a bathroom curtain liner to the lid with scotch packaging tape in order to look inside the tub without opening it, and so that light could penetrate the substrate better.

-------

This pic is 10 days into colonization:

These two pics are day five of fruiting conditions (pins visible):

Scroll through the pages to see how well all of this works together. I got around 14 dried ounces indoor and several ounces outdoors after I threw the substrate outside because it flushed 4 times.

if you prepped your rye correctly, 10 cups for 10 quarts WOULD fill the jars 2/3 full. dont tell people 20 cups for 101 jars, thats way to much... youll have so much left over and nothing to do with it.
once soaked for 24 hours, the grain expands. once boiled, the grain expands.

I'm not sure if it's because of our grain or what but we use organic rye. We just pressure cooked 5 quart jars last night. We measured 10 cups of rye grain, soaked all 10 cups for 24 hours, and we were able to get 5 quart jars at roughly 2/3 full. After soaking the grain does expand no doubt, but after we pressure cook, the grain remained at the exact same level in the jar.

did you boil your grain?
everyone uses organic rye.
the other stuff may contain fungicides...

Organic grains are often treated with bacillus thuringiensis tho. I use what is cheap and available. WBS ain't organic, neither is animal feed.

okay haha, didnt know that!
but maybe you used half cups lmao. either way not a big deal, but id research on why thats happening because youre using so much more rye than everyone else i feel, and that will add up $

Yeah my friend and I watched the video half a dozen times and have used the method many times and had the same issue each time. We are measuring using a 1 cup measuring cup from the store - its brand new and reads 1 cup on the side. In the video you will see he has two large strainers full of rye, that is way more then 10 cups.

The first time we tried using this method following the video exactly, we got 9 quart jars filled half way up or less then half way up in some of our quart jars. In order to achieve 2/3 full we had to use 20 cups for 10 quart jars. The rye always turns out perfect regardless, but we did have to use more rye then what the tek called for.

This is basically the amount of rye we have in our jars, except ours is about a half inch less:

12 days into fruiting - noticed that the substrate was a little dry, my friend used a big box fan in a small closet for increased FAE and I think it dried the surface out a bit so we got a new small fan that seems to be doing better.

I see tons of hyphal knotting, if you're humidity is on point then that tub is about to explode!

I realized that the bottom 4 holes were not stuffed as tight as they should be so I fixed this last night, this should increase the surface humidity pretty significantly. We are still trying to get the FAE right without taking out too much humidity.

Day 14 of fruiting, took a few of the room and my current jars colonizing. The surface moisture has definitely increased - I misted the surface and sides before taking the pics.

Do you think the surface of the substrate looks good? I have read a lot of users speaking of causing aborts by misting primordia, knots, or pins. I have been trying to find a good balance of a hydrated surface and not too saturated. The reason I lost all my surface moisture is because my friend used a large box fan for 3-4 days and it dried the tub a little too much. If the box fan wasn't used, I wouldn't have had to mist until after the first flush. After misting the tub I fanned really good with that clear lid in the pics next to the tub for a solid minute.

it would only cause aborts if they were over misting a properly dialed in monotub and saturating it for multiple days.  Which during the first flush i find i dont have to mist hardly if it all.

All these full canopies you see on this site are from monos being dialed in successfully from day one (for the most part).

Its trial and error.  Still a good looking tub and the more monos you do the better you will get just like with any hobby.  Practice practice practice
