With cakes they are easy to access usually. I would probably cut off of cakes myself.

Don't patch the divot,  that's no Bueno. Personally I like twist and pull but sometimes cutting is a help to prevent undue damage.

I should note that leaving stumps is a bigger mold magnet than a divot IME. I think a lot of it is species dependant, certainly you should only cut shiitake.

Using a casing layer helps prevent divot from reaching too deep and exposing the grains. This is an additional benefit.

Another thing to note is that with cubes the goal should be to get as much in the first flush. With a high performance culture, 200% BE is attainable  even with bulk. At that point keeping for more than a single flush is moot. Show me where to start cutting in a tub like this anyways.

So, based on your experience my tub isn't ruined due to the large divots, because you obviously experience this with your tubs and you get 2nd and 3rd flushes. I assume the divots only increase the chance of contams, its not guaranteed. The only question I have is will the mycelium grow into the divots like it does with cut stumps and re-colonize that area of exposed grain?

I have been doing twist and pull method and harvested those first two 90ish grams worth without causing a single divot. I gently pull and twist and push the mushroom around carefully until it shows me how it wants to come up, it takes longer but it works the best. When I'm dealing with a clump I just pull each mushroom individually until I get the last one - like I said it can be difficult to achieve but with patience its possible. You get no divots and you get to eat the stump rather then let it get colonized and unused when cutting.

My experience  with divots is that they usually  pin vert well as long as spores dont hit the sub. Unfortunately  i didn't  get to harvest in time and some areas have spores on it. Grrrrrrrr

Here is two pictures of right after I harvested this morning, I am considering dumping two 8 oz glasses of water tomorrow night to re-hydrate the tub. I misted right before I took these pictures. When I pour the water on, I plan to let the water sit for 4-6 hours and then take out the cake by grabbing the trash bag and draining the excess water out.

Hey thanks a lot! Glad your enjoying the pics/grow. That is awesome you got some pins man. One of the main reasons I am posting here is so others can read this and hopefully benefit from it in some way. There are so many teks and threads so I tried to put it all in one spot on my first post. I'll be harvesting more tonight and pouring the water on top of the substrate (mostly on the sides as RR and Pasty have mentioned in other grow logs).

I will update with pics tomorrow  - have a good day!

 Yeah I'm not really sure myself :lmafo:

I left around 50 grams in there too. I re-hydrated the substrate last night, tried something that may be a new tek, ill post what I did after lunch. The tek I did allows for you to keep the substrate in the tub, without having to remove it, and you avoid damaging the mushrooms still fruiting.

The re-hydrate was delayed because I just kept getting mushrooms, which is a good thing, but it kept me from removing the substrate because I knew it would ruin the mushrooms (specifically the mushrooms growing on the sides of the substrate). Every time I went to pull the bag up the mushrooms on the sides would start to cave in and tear, so I knew I had to come up with a different way of draining the excess water the substrate didn't absorb :cubie:
