If you don't air dry them first, you'll need about 5 times the wet weight of the shrooms in silica gel for it to work. Unless you bought some of the expensive lab grade variety, the gel you have will probably only absorb 20% of its weight in water before becoming saturated. You can "recharge" the silica by baking it at ~250 deg for two or three hours to get it totally dried out. If you are re-using little packets out of [whatever] then you'll really want to dry them out before use.
Calcium carbonate [damp-rid / dry rite] is cheap [about $4 per quart], readily available, and works well, you just have to keep the shrooms from touching it.

I'm using a container about one foot tall with a base of about 5 inches x 5 inches. My "racks" are about 4 inches apart. And I'm using a thin layer of silica gel.... about 2 big spoon fulls spread out....
Are my mushrooms just too far from the the desiccant?

I suggest......
CAPTAIN MAX'S HURRICANE DRYING TEK
What would dry your shrooms more efficient than the
combination of warm air and air movement commonly found in a
late summer hurricane? 100 mph 100 degree winds ensure quick
drying without compromising potency. Problem is, those damn
hurricanes show up when and where they feel like and they
don't stick around long enough to do the job!
Now, with Captain Max's Hurricane Tek, anyone can dry
their shrooms with the force of a hot-weather hurricane.
Follow these simple instructions......
Turn oven to 100 - 150 degrees. Place shrooms on sheet of
paper on middle rack. Split thicker stems for faster drying.
Plus the bluing that will occur makes them look real cool!
Leave oven door open.
Place small fan on door positioned so that it blows directly
on shrooms. Flip your shrooms over every 15 minutes or so.
They should be cracker dry in about 2 hours or less. Smaller
pieces will be ready sooner.
Store in a canning jar, make sure the lid is on the right
way. Throw in a small pack of dessicant for extra
protection.
It's that easy!
