Can one ever completely assure another that one understands a certain position?

Dialog brings it out. Sometimes dialog is seen as confrontational... but that's just how it goes...

The word 'completely' changes the equation. I am talking about enough knowledge to understand the basics of a position.

What is "enough"?
Does one not need to be certain that the other understands "enough"?

So does the burden of understanding lie with the topic starter or the respondent?

I'd like to think that it lies with the topic starter. If their position was stated clearly, concisely, and as error-free as possible, then there would be less to attack and more to discuss.

And when it doesn' t work that way, there is no reason for ANYBODY, especially the topic starter, to be offended.

Hell, I sometimes LIKE the fact that I wasn't all that clear in my original post... it allows me to see how a subtle exclusion and/or mistake can cause such misperceptions.

You thought of it first too, I read your mind and decided to steal your thunder!

I was thinking earlier today that at the beginning of each page in a thread, there should be reserved space for a moderator to list the issues that are being argued.

I sense post #2288250...

Look at the time of the posts.  This time you beat me in less than a minute.

How many of us attack a position we do not understand? If you don't understand a particular position (argument) how can you adequately refute it?

How many of us pretend that we know the motivation of another person? How can we be certain of their intent when others perceive the person's actions differently than us?

We can't.

so whats the point of discussing anything in the first place, if we just doubt everything everybody says?

What would be the point of making in argument, when in fact your argument is based only on the interpretation of another individual. Considering this is not the science forum, why discuss things we cant out rightly prove?

Ive asked this before, and ive always tried to understand. Maybe its a personal thing for everybody.

Sounds like bullshit, I thought the point of argument and debate was so that one can actually grasp a better understanding of whatever it is they are talking about.

Here are a few blindspots an immature hypothetical person might have:

Blindspot #1: Practice "mind-reading" when looking into the hearts of others.

Blindspot #2: Assume YOUR view is the ONLY correct one.

Blindspot #3: Stubbornly refuse to listen when one explains, like a child plugging his ears.

Blindspot #4: Disregards the opinions of others because they are not in his/her league.

Blindspot #5: Generate lies because one is stuck in ego.

Blindspot #6: Violate trust because one is stuck in ego.

Blindspot #7: Violate own standards because one is superior to such things.

Blindspot #8: Arrogantly claim one is one of the rare experts that knows and understands all while you are an ignoramus.

Blindspot #9: Enjoys fighting even when claiming that one is peace-loving and non-competitive.

Blindspot #10: Pout when someone doesn't heel to his commands.

Ah, forget it. There are WAY too many to list. A mirror might help this hypothetical person, but if this is a reflection of lengthy spiritual and philosophic training, well...
