 Bullshit alarm

This morning on CNN I was watching a debate over gay marriage, and I heard one of them ask the question, "What sort of message does this send to our children?" My bullshit alarm immediately went off. Why must public policy be made based on some sort of message the politicians think it will send? Why not just base it on what works? Anyway, I figure we should get a list going of other catch-phrases that make your bullshit alarm go off.

A little better, but still bullshit. Different people will get different messages out of it, so it's arrogant for politicians to assume that everyone will get the same message from it.

i think it boils down to this:
marriage may be a staple of our culture (and most every culture). it may be a religious rite. this is all fine and good. in the eyes of the law however, the ONLY reason for recognizing it is that it is a legal arrangement... for things like taxes, property rights, kinship, etc. it is wrong to allow people of the opposite sex to enter into such a legal arrangment but not people of the same sex.
and what's more, the government cannot actually ban gay marriage. they can only refuse to recognize it... which really means what? gays can still marry, they can still call themselves spouses... the cultural and religious aspect of marriage can be "undermined" just as easily with or without government recognition of the legal aspects of the arrangement.
people are stupid sometimes.

I think it's an important lesson that children learn that we will punish other people just to teach them (the children) a lesson. That we're willing to sacrafice other people's rights so that parents can let the government do their jobs as parents for them.

Sending messages is important. Just you wait. Owners and players of professional sports are going to send the message that steroids are bad. Then we can finaly be rid of the evil steroids.

I'd like to hear the government explanation why steroids are illegal.
Are they afraid someone will go into a roid rage and drive their car into a bussload of children?
What exactly is the justification of that?

Steroids are legal though. It's just that people buy things intended for farm animals and stick them in their own bodies instead at lower doses. Also I think asthma inhalers contain a kind of steroid. I think the results to baseball could actually be catostraphic to players livelyhoods(as far as being millionaries go) if they banned steroids(and enforced it) some of these heavy hitters would lose a huge part of their game.
Kinda on topic- these "bullshit statements" usually are defended by saying they are for the good of the majority.

We've heard "it's for the children" starting in the early 90's and it seems to be both sides only defense when policies such as this are brought forth. That's why i like George Carlin's skit on why children are over-rated, good stuff.

The main steroids that athletes use are androstene (actually, I realize that the list has about 200 name brand and generic drugs on it), but the point is, I don't think that the steroids fed to animals and the ones used for people work on each other. I don't think that many major league baseball players use 'roids. Mark McQuire only used creatien monohydrate, totally legal, to achieve those cannons that set the homerun record.

I think that alot of hte bullshit statements are mainly emotional appeals. I think that man/man homoseuality is quite disgusting, but through my study of morality and ethics, I can't find anything that would give a proper statement to ban it. If two guys want to have a sexual relationship, I don't think that it is immoral. But, by playing to emotional and religious sentiments, they can rally more support.

I'm not sure your steroid knowledge is up to par, no offence. I work in a gym and get to see this stuff first hand. A cycle is not 1 week long(average is 6-12). People DO use animal steroids on themselves(winstrol comes to mind for horses as well as sprinters). And Mark Macquire was on Andro.
