the spiritual healing powers of... running??
    #2196791 -

i am wondering just how many of you have had to deal with genuine loss, and remorse for something that has turned out so badly after you had such high hopes for that something or someone?

does it ever seem like too much? do you ever wish you could just pick up and run?
i did, so i ran.

i didnt run like forrest gump ran, with no purpose, i ran to take my mind off the things that were bothering me. i ran to keep myself busy so i didnt have to hear the clamour in my head, and i ran to sort out my feelings in this time of despair for me.

anyone else ever do the same?

Not with running, with biking though.

I like to bike long distances for hours on end. If I'm happy, I bike at an average pace (average being subjective... depends on what kind of shape I'm in) my mind wanders and it's like a form of meditation, if I'm in a bad mood or depressed I bike in a frenzy. Thoughts are erased and replaced with complete focus on providing the energy for my legs, the only thing I can think to do is to keep pushing. Sometimes I'd push my self so hard I'd feel nauseous for quite a while after getting off my bike... I'm not sure how healthy that is, but I'm young.

I run/bike for spiritual reasons.
At the moment when you're giving it all you've got,
it's the ultimate release, the self dissolves and
there is no more you - just the act of running etc.
Often when running/biking I ask myself "why ?" why
am I doing this ? and then I laugh  and do it
anyways... it's the ultimate Zen experience.
And yes it does help to keep the clamour down and also
to get in touch with your body and the experience/process
of effort. It beautiful to realize that effort is joyful
and not painful at all - hence the difference between
physical pain and physical strain/effort.

You are powerless to change the situation, yet you desire with all your heart to do so. This creates an extreme dichotomy between your wishes and reality. By running, what you are doing is temporarily "discharging" a build-up of negative emotional energy.

This is a healthy manner of dealing with the issues as opposed to heavy drinking, breaking things, self-abuse/suicide or other violent discharges. Is it "spiritual"? I don't think so in that the activity itself will not give you more wisdom nor "cure" you of the despair.

The real wisdom will come (slowly and painfully) when you accept that impermanence and the thwarting of desire and efforts are part and parcel of the package called life.

The proof is in the pudding.

I agree. But there's something about expending physical effort
that really helps put things in perspective. Biking up a
gorgeous mountain on a beautiful summer day, giving it all you've
got till your lungs and heart are about to explode, and then
u think about something that was bothering u and it seems
so trivial in that perspective...
