The lid makes contact, but probably not perfect like a metal lid. They work great, just don't handle them excessively around the neck.

Shroom supply sells o rings for them as well.

Cool I'll check those out. Gotta get a 60cc empty syringe too for my LI. I'll be following Muda's tek for that.

If you're really worried about it you can saran wrap or
parafilm wrap the lids at the seam

Hmm..I might just order the rubber gaskets now and save myself time and stress. Parafilming the sides seems like a hassle. I'll have to do that each time I move the jars in and out of the SAB.

After a inoc or g2g, just parafilm the seam and set on a
shelf to colonize. Why would you have to do it more than once?

Also, this is only if you are worried about it

when i used plastic lids, it wasn't the lack of a gasket that bothered me, it was the RTV or silicone that held on the SFD and peeled that was my issue.
i don't think u need the gasket thing unless ur doing LC's.  just make sure ur silicone isn't peeling after a few PC cycles.

Good point, didn't think about that. I'll do that just for added protection.

And I just filled up my jar with water and tightened the plastic jar lid to see if it would leak. I shook the jar up really good and there was absolutely no leakage. I'm pretty sure it'll be fine, just over-thinking it.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind. I make sure I silicone my SFD cutout securely to the lid by pressing down firmly for a couple of seconds and I always let it cure for 24 hours before PC'ing for the first time.

Sand around the hole in every direction with coarse sand paper before adding the silicone and filter.

when i used them, i did that.  but still, there was peeling.  some lids never peeled.  i still actually have those.

i just use metal lids now though.

Weird. I've never had a problem with them. What brand are they?

How so? Did you notice higher contam rates with the jars with plastic lids? Also, do you use rubber gaskets for your jars.

I like how they would be easier to untighten in the SAB, without creating too much unnecessary movements, which usually happens while having to pry open the metal lid and having it pop open, which stirs up the still air.

when u use metal lids, use rubber side up.  it is easier to use in SAB or FH.

plastic lids, no matter who makes them, will eventually warp with repeated PC cycles.

it is no different than pasty plates or v tek containers, and i would guess both pasty and violet would tell u pp5's can and will warp in time. the canning lids are only different in that the plastic is thicker, so would take longer to warp in theory.

so its a matter of the grower being conscious of that, if they choose to use them for a prolonged time.  some people use them for years, and no issues.

metal will rust.  but it will not warp.

I use rubber side down. I have lids that are a decade old and rusted as fuck that i still use.
Plastic lids shot my contams through the roof. My guess is shit got up underneath them and then when i g2g'd it got fucked. So i went back to metal and good ol tyvek and I'm loving it.

I had the same issue with plastic lids and twist-n-loc lids.  Rubber down metal lids gave me zero problems, plastic lids gave me lots of contams, right on the surface, on the outer edge.  Very suggestive that contams wafted under the poorly sealed lid.  The lids were cranked down as much as possible and they still went bad.

I've heard the majority of people use them without issue, that wasn't the case for me.

P.S. I used Ball brand plastic lids...

Ohhh damnn that sucks.. thanks for the heads up man. I'll have to definitely consider getting some rubber gaskets for these lids to get an airtight seal or just sticking with the metal lids. Why change what already works, right? I just wanted to look cool and get the plastic lids that I've seen soo many other people using, I thought that was the "in" thing   Didn't realize there were soo many issues with them tho.

some people i look up to on here use them without issue.

we can't all grow the same.  if we did, this forum wouldn't be necessary.

goal should be healthy, high quality mushrooms.

Very true. It's all about trial and error. I have a simple solution to this problem, I'll just use half with metal lids and half with plastic lids and compare growth/contam rates, while keeping other factors the same of course. It's a simple experiment.

I use metal lids with the rubber side down as well. I have no issues prying the lids off easily. After a while it becomes very easy once you figure out the tricks to doing so. I suppose using a flowhood and not being cramped in a SAB helps.

There is a better way to attach SFDs to the plastic lids than silicone. After you drill your hole(s) and have your SFD disc ready, take a torch to the area around the hole briefly to soften up and melt the plastic just a little. Then slap on your SFD and hold it there for a second. Then you have a permanently mounted SFD.

I used plastic lids I got as a gift once for shiitake spawn. They had watman filters in the lid and rubber SHIPs. I inoculated with agar though. I used the rubber gaskets. While I did not have any contam issues in the end and it took excessively long to colonize grains because of the watmans filter and wedge inoculation. My main concern was actually the rubber gasket, which IMO is a requirement for preventing unfiltered GE. When you open the lid to drop a wedge in or transfer grains from the jar there is a chance the gasket can get knocked and fall into the jar and you have to fish it out. Obviously this is not good. Also the gaskets are very easy to fuck up the alignment on the jar. And you don't really want to be fucking around with the gasket on the lip of a jar of sterile grain. So after that run I stopped using plastic lids for anything but LC. I had bought 2 more boxes of lids to attach SFDs to using the method above. They have remained in the box since then. I suppose you could RTV the gasket to the lid, just hope you got the alignment right when you do.

A leak test with a plastic lid and water will only show you when there is a big leak. Very small leaks that contaminants can get through will not necessarily allow water through because of waters surface tension.

Sorry for the :derail:

I've never used a rubber gasket for my plastic lids. I have used the same lids over and over again for the last 8 months. I haven't noticed and warping or any increase in contam rate. I'm sure just like anything else, theyll eventually need to be replaced but you can say that for just about anything.
