Large orange shelf mushrooms on campus

I found these on a tree by a road on campus. They're extremely large; the black lens cap is 57mm in diameter.

Any ID's? It's quite cold outside, I'm guessing below 50F.

No ID for the growth, but as for the pics, I can ID them as beautiful! (corny, I know) :thumbup:

mmm those are edible! I wonder if I should eat them, but they are literally growing on one of those islands in the middle of the street from a tree...

they are quite good, and if you take the time to key them out, or at least compare with a good description, they are quite safe.

i just found some on my rescent camping trip, and they made a verry tasty pasta. i would describe the taste as being similar to oyster mushrooms, but a bit more woodsy and surely more pronounced.

you should be sure to cook them thouroughly and sample them in a small quantity first, as allergic/hypersensitivity reactions are nort rare.

wait at least 24 hours before eating more.

That is quite an old specimen; however, it is likely that parts are still edible. The margins are likely to be the tenderest and most maggot free. I have read that L. sulphureus is best when in the blob stage.

And even though it is called chicken of the woods, I would use it as a chicken substitute.

the margins remain edible throughout as they are the part taht continues to grow.

if you look allong the underside, inward from the margin, you can often see somewhat of a line where there is a change in texture. this is the line where they become too tough to digest. it is not really obvious, but if you look at enough of them, you'll come to see waht i am talking about.

Those are perfect, probably the whole mushroom is good to eat, the look like they grew in relatively cool wet weather, when i find them like that and they bruise that bright orange where thebeen handled they're still juicy and tender. You'll have to try it for yourself, but when they grow when its colder they seem to stay tender and tasty even out of the blob stage. Of course if those are growing on Eucalyptus don't eat them, but you still have some great pictures.
