I'm actually planning on moving to Oregon in the spring myself. We're thinking beaverton.

I'm in the Hillsboro/Beaverton area. It's a pretty cool place to live. It's close to nature, and PDX which is a pretty awesome city.

Oregon is hell. Finally just moved out of that state. Back in Washington for now. Oregon's income tax is straight up bullshit. $200 a month taken out for oregon taxes. I would have to spend nearly $2,500 a month in washington to have the sales tax equal that.

good to know. good to see you post again too

you gotta admit though - oregon is pretty right?

oregon is hell because of the income tax??? that outweighs all the great aspects of it?  it seems to me they make pretty good use of the taxes here - i won't mind paying (once i get an over the table job.)

So the taxes are fine as long as you are cheating on them and not paying?  I agree!

I think they make piss poor use of the tax money and waste much of it.  Hell is an exaggeration, but its certainly a reason to move for many.  Move and work in Washington, get a 9% raise, lower property tax and better schools for your kids.

Oregon is beautiful, but so is Washington. I love living in Vancouver. 10 mins from portland, 50 minutes from mt hood, 30 mins from the falls in the gorge.

Weed is going legal in July 2015!

Then again, Washington is way ahead of us.

Personally, i would move to Washington for the waterparks. But Oregon is pretty sweet, i mean free shrooms, hell yeah!

How hard is it to get a medical Marijuana card in Washington? I've got 7 herniated discs, radicular neuropathy, disc degeneration disease, spinal stenosis, chronic myofascial pain and all are unresponsive to 2 years physical therapy, 900mg oxycontin a day... and wife has documented fibromyalgia with some of the related maladies above (minus the spine stuff).

How are medical patients treated there? As easy as Oregon or shitty like Connecticut, Mass, Minnesota?

The thing about recreational in Oregon is that it can potentially put medical in a precarious position and make it suspect.

Wherever we end up, we want to be licensed mmj patients, so when/if recreational gets torn down we have medicine. I'm not living my life on opiates, hell no, and I'm only going to get worse, as is wifey.

yep
i'd be curious to see how WA and OR compare when you break everything down though - especially looking at things from a non-property owner, non-high income person (like myself.)

for instance, i just bought a big squash, 8 persimmons, 1 lb of cranberries, almond milk, pasta sauce, onion rings and 4 pomegranates for $7.38. $5 to ride public transit all day.  i went to an awesome zoo for $2.50 a couple of days ago.  my rent is $680 (1 b/r) in a great part of town with a great view.  had the best vegan burrito in my life the other day, right down the street, for $6.50.  3 blood banks around here where anyone can make $200 for 4 donations.  day labor places that pay $10-$12 per hour and its fairly easy to get work.  lots of co-ops, employee-owned businesses, local-centric consumption, etc.  there's a program where you can get a free bike for commuting to work.  there's an organization that gives you a free computer And teaches you how to build them (freegeek.org).  there's an organization that helps you set up 'nodes' with your neighbors so you can split the wi-fi bill.  there's an organization that goes around collecting fruit from underutilized trees and provides them to the needy.  and that's just a few of the places i know of from my very limited time here.

i would be interested to know how Seattle compares in these respects.  i'm sure they have similar orgs, but i feel like overall Portland is probably a better place for low-income people.

just stumbled across this while looking for a comparison of state tax schemes
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/govbeat/wp/2013/09/21/the-state-that-taxes-the-poor-the-most-is-a-blue-one/
Poor families in Washington state pay 16.9 percent of their total income in state and local taxes, more than any other state in the nation, according to a new report from the nonprofit Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, which advocates for progressive tax policies.

Interesting, I wonder how one can spend 17% of their income in taxes when the sales tax is less than 10%.  They must be spending more than they earn!  No wonder they are poor...

Of course renters do implicitly pay for property tax.  That is probably part of it.
