For the Shakedown check out gd1978-12-28 from the Golden Hall Convention Center San Diego and why not include the playin' >uncle john's>playin' from 5-19-77. if its power you want try estimated >eyes from 8-30-80 Philly spectrum.5-11-78 has a 15 minute dancin' that will not disapoint but the one from 2-26-77 or 5-4-77 will do as well.

Nice collection!
Yes, you mentioned some good song versions we'll keep them in mind for later additions if such a thing is meant to be! I really wanted to include the "Crazy Fingers" from Two from the Vault and "Eyes of the World" (I have a number of versions in mind) as well as a long list of other favorites but only so much fits on one CD!
I'll pick out something short to fill the disc soon unless someone picks one for me

I've just begun listening to Greatful Dead, and I like them, but I don't know where to get the best songs. This seems like a great thread for that. I think it would be great if you could convert these sets to mp3 and post them somewhere on the net. Maybe it can be hosted on the shroomery server (for members only otherwise you might get a bandwidth problem). Or if the shroomery doesn't have the bandwidth, maybe we can find some members who would be willing to host one or two songs. Then you could make a download page which links to the individual songs.
just my two cents..

you mean like this ?
http://www.gdlive.com/
some people find the downloads stop part way thru . at least with the shns. i have found that simply restarting the stalled file then closing the stalled one results in it resuming from the stalled point then completeing the download. here's another helpful site you may appreciate since the shn format offers fuller sound than mp3's which you've mentioned http://www.furthurnet.org/guyforget/shnfaq.html

I think it would be better to have all the best songs in one place. Where they are easy to download and you don't have to search. It's also a more efficient way than sending out CD's, I would think. It just requires some nice people to donate some hosting space. I would be willing to host two songs from the list.

sorry but to true deadheads they're alllllll the best songs. Shn's are a lossless file compression format saving considerable storage space over wavs . you decode shns to wav to burn onto cdr with a conversion tool such as MKW act which is a free download . you just drag and drop the shn and out comes a wav ready to burn. mp3's considerably diminish the sound quality of the original source signal by cutting off data to shrink the file size. so if you for instance want to obtain say GD 1977-06-09 Winterland the highest quality source is easily available in shn form which has been taken from digital tape made from the master reel . So you see to then convert that source to MP3 would be to significantly diminish the amount of data contained in the signal thru the compressing processs resulting in a very noticeable loss in the final product. In fact in full time trading circles you are warned and admonished not to introduce any mp3 genrations into a lineage you plan on trading without making that fact clearly understaood. .the GDLive site really is the kind of site cyberbeast seems to be talking about weather he can see it or not. hosting a site with just a few "best" songs is a start but when you have whole shows from which to choose and CDrs are so cheap that might soon prove to be inadequate. as you can see from the collection i've amased the music can become quite addictive when you're exposed to it with any regularity. I don't wnat to come off as some authority but i've been involved with this for a while now and just wanted to share some insights.

It's strange hearing people talk about huge quality losses when it comes to mp3. If I encode in 256kbps I really don't notice much quality difference, unless you have a $5000 stereo tower. It brings the filesize down a lot.

I've downloaded hundreds of hours from GDlive mostly mp3 because it's easier than having to use the shorten software to un compress the shn files, but now that I know there is a quality difference I'll start downloading more and more shn files.
Thanks!

Sorry Pala but I've got to veto that Jack Straw from 10/19/71, it's nice but in it's early incarnation Bobby's singing all of what will become Jerry's lines!
Hope you understand!

Indeed. I haven't listened to it yet-just downloaded it. I'm just trying to collect some firsts for myself - I've found the firsts of:
Here Comes Sunshine Eyes of the World Loose Lucy Cryptical->The Other One Mexicali Blues Jack Straw Sugar Magnolia among others - these are all on GDLive
For more Dark Star recommendations - go to Deadlists.com, then to Help and Resources, then to Dark Star document; this is one of the best GD pages I've seen-very extensive and helpful. Check it out.

well i do happen to have a fairly decent Hi-Fi system at home and in the auto. AR 9's with Kefs the AR9's are about five feet tall and weigh around 100 lbs. each in the car KEFs again.I can notice the differnece between MP3s and a lossless trac weather from flac or shn even if the mp3 has a bitrate over 350 bps . I've juist made the choice to make the extra effort to have the best available. i haven't found the work to be too much. That list developed only since last Christmas.

Nope. I found out about the firsts by clicking on different songs on the Annotated Grateful Dead http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/ then going to GDLive and seeing if they've got the show. A good one for firsts is 2/9/73 Stanford (firsts are Here Comes Sunshine, Eyes, Row Jimmy, Loose Lucy, China Doll, They Love Each Other, and Wave that Flag:)).
