Shroomery Pics Volume 1
    #1889517 - 09/07/03 05:48 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Here's my dream......

Dick has his picks and the Vault has some great shows released, Phil has released the best from his zone!

What I would like to do is compile a list of the favorite versions of dead songs from my shroomery brothers and sisters!

I'm thinking one to three cd's worth of music (for starters), and I want to be able to send them out to other shroomery members so that they can enjoy the music that shines brighter than any other on earth! I want to spread the love and light of Jerry like I have done with spores these many years.

So what are your thoughts, your favorite version of Eyes Of the World, Deal, Chinacat, Wharf Rat, Morning Dew, Sugar Magnolia, and on and on!

If I dont have the song from the show that you're suggesting we will have to work out how you can get it to me, but I have a fairly large collection.

What are your thoughts !!!!

You guys know who you are

Lately ive been listening to the dead a lot, I just let my friend borrow some of my friends stuff, and i have europe 72 on vinyl, i absolutly love "truckin" from that album, i would be interested in getting a copy of that set when you make it, give me a holler when its complete, its unfortunate jerry died before i started liking the dead....anyway good idea on the cd idea

Sweet idea!  Never knew Dead live was public domain.  I don't have an idea of which tracks I'd like as I've sampled only a small amount of their catalogue, but maybe I'll be able to rec' one from the show on the 19th at Shoreline that I'll be at

As long as there is no profit made the Dead support the spreading of their music. Thats why they have a tapers section and every Deadhead has hundreds(or thousands) of bootlegs.

Ripple let me look through my collection and get back to you. So many goods versions and so many years.

Estimated > Eyes of the World - May 22, 1977(edit)...

Best segueway I've ever heard.

I wish I had the real bootleg of that instead of those damned chopped up uncomplete Dick's Picks. I don't like having edited chunks of Dead history, I don't under stand the logic of Dick thinking he knew better than the Dead about what listeners should hear, but what can you do? besides it's still very nice to have a wide variety of versions available for anyone who doesn't collect bootlegs.

Also since I'm editing I'll add Terrapin Station May 7, 1977 & Scarlet>Fire from May 8, 1977

Great stuff coming in so far!

Great American is a wonderful choice, I'll have to check to see if I have some of the other dates mentioned. I have Europe on vinyl but not on CD.

Great American:

I think the CD should start with Bill's into > Help on the way > franklins's Tower!

I love Phils Bass throughout the whole show!

Eyes of the world and Cray Fingers are both excellent versions!
lets hold them for later cause this whole show could actually be the entire CD it's so good!

So far:

Great American

Intro .46
Help on the Way 7.52
Franklins Tower 6.58

4/71 fillmore

Morning Dew 10.41

I would love a chinacat or St. Sephen
next but I don't have the ones suggested on CD.

I haven't heard that version of Dark Star. I'll have to get it.

My favorite Dark Stars: Live/Dead
11/8/69 Fillmore (they go into Dark Star 3 times: Dark Star->The Other One->Dark Star->UJB Jam->Dark Star->St. Stephen->The Eleven ; how incredible is that!) BTW 11/8/69 is DP #16

I'll have to think about other songs - so many songs and so many versions!

I also really like the Playing in the Band from the Grateful Dead Movie (winterland 1974). It's very spacey, and Jerry started doing his vibrato like on a violin. It's incredible. the Morning Dew and Stella Blue from that movie are also great.

Hey. I'm listening to a GREAT version of Mountains of the Moon (3/1/69 Fillmore). I haven't heard many versions of it, so I couldn't say that it's the BEST, but it's damn good. Nice organ work by Pigpen.

All great choices! my version of He's Gone from 8/27/72 is very hissy though,
That's a great version of Loose Lucy!

And yes the Phil Zone Hard to Handle is a fine choice too!

Lets stick with Dead for now JGB shows will be a different project!

nice collection, ripple! like you, my bootlegs center around '69-'74, plus '77 and scattered gems everywhen else. i havent actually cataloged my collection since it was all on tape, though. i think you've inspired me to get organized - today is a pretty gloomy saturday around here, anyways.

yes it's gloomy here in NY as well and I'm doing some work on my collection too!

yeah I'm a big fan of the early years....love 1968 but then again i love everything pre Brent!

That's how I catalogue pre Brent and Post Brent!
Post Brent is not as dear to my heart, yet I would still never miss a show!

4/17/72 has a short, but very tight truckin'

howzabout a nice clementine from '68?

4/17/72 I have (Dillon Gym I believe) but poor quality!

clementine from '68? I think that Volume two may be older stuff!

right now I want a collection of songs that will reach people!
I'm always being asked and threads are always being put up asking "what should i listen to to get into the dead?"

I'm going to make this CD and spread it like I've spread spores

Looking for a short but good Dark star, a Chinacat > Rider, and St. Stephen > Eleven

May have found it too 8/22/68 Fillmore West!

lets see

i hear ya. more accessible stuff...

there are good st steven > eleven's from the ark, boston 4/21-22/69

good luck finding a short dark star - that 4/13/70 monster REALLY took me there, in the back seat of a car driving through rhode island one winter after a phish show. i was on acid & ecstacy, and a friend dropped in this cassette. BLOWN AWAY!!!

china > rider : the one on europe '72 is good, also 3/23/74 cow palace, although jerry fucks up the "headlight" lyrics.

i really like the shorter, 1st set type songs, too, for getting people on the bus.
everyone loves a good bertha
half-step from 11/5/77 is powerful
TLEO?

Yeah, my downloads ALWAYS stop in the middle. The last few days I've been spending HOURS trying to download just a few shows. It's so frustrating and yet so worth it.

"4/17/72 I have (Dillon Gym I believe) but poor quality! "

Yeah, I've got the mp3 show from GDLive. I like the Me and Bobby McGee and the Sing Me Back Home. Had to get that show anyway-the only time they've played my school. I walk into Dillon and can just imagine that the Dead were there in 71!!! That had to be great. Ahh-to be born about 30 years earlier.

p.s. 4/17/72 is from tivoli denmark.  i dont actually have a tape or cd, but i have a crappy vhs from a tv broadcast with about half of the show.  the low quality makes it kinda trippy, though.

4/17/71 is from dillon gym and is a beaut.  THE classic good lovin'

I was also having lots of problems downloading off of gdlive until I saw a post on their forums about a program called getright.  It is one of those download managers where you can download many things at once and also accelerate the downloads by doing in in segments.  Anyways, once I downloaded the program I had absolutely no problems getting anything I wanted.  You can go here to download  getright

Trust me guys, its not that hard to use and I can get an entire shn show from there in about an hour or two with absolutely no trouble at all.  It will auto resume for you and it was maxing out my internet connection so I was getting really good speeds.

Oh yea, thanks for all the suggestions of great dead shows to download as I was really wanting to check out alot of different dead stuff and I had no idea where to start.  Needless to say I have downloaded some amazing shows!  I think I'm hooked!  Anyways, thanks and peace.

For advice on Dark Stars, go to deadlists.com then to Help and Resources and to the Dark Star Document. It's got info, times, and ratings. Very helpful.

I'd have to vote for a Birdsong in there... but it's 2am and if I started digging through my cassettes it'd wake the wifey.

That is a beautiful setlist so far...

I'm also partial to some of the first-set kind of songs - El Paso, Me and My Uncle...  but they don't fit with that set.  Maybe for disc #2   (...listening to a nice Me and My Uncle 8-27-72 right now...)

Yeah, I'm thinking maybe a Deal or a Jack Straw maybe!

Next CD will include Eyes of the World for sure! With some good first set material and I would like to get that Dark Star that Chinacat mentioned.

For the Shakedown check out gd1978-12-28 from the Golden Hall Convention Center San Diego and why not include the playin' >uncle john's>playin' from 5-19-77. if its power you want try estimated >eyes from 8-30-80 Philly spectrum.5-11-78 has a 15 minute dancin' that will not disapoint but the one from 2-26-77 or 5-4-77 will do as well.

Nice collection!

Yes, you mentioned some good song versions we'll keep them in mind for later additions if such a thing is meant to be! I really wanted to include the "Crazy Fingers" from Two from the Vault and "Eyes of the World" (I have a number of versions in mind) as well as a long list of other favorites but only so much fits on one CD!

I'll pick out something short to fill the disc soon unless someone picks one for me

What about Jack Straw from 10/19/71 - it's the very first Jack Straw - and it's available from GDLive on SHN!!!

I've just begun listening to Greatful Dead, and I like them, but I don't know where to get the best songs. This seems like a great thread for that.
I think it would be great if you could convert these sets to mp3 and post them somewhere on the net. Maybe it can be hosted on the shroomery server (for members only otherwise you might get a bandwidth problem).
Or if the shroomery doesn't have the bandwidth, maybe we can find some members who would be willing to host one or two songs. Then you could make a download page which links to the individual songs.

just my two cents..

you mean like this ?

http://www.gdlive.com/

some people find the downloads stop part way thru . at least with the shns. i have found that simply restarting the stalled file then closing the stalled one results in it resuming from the stalled point then completeing the download.
here's another helpful site you may appreciate since the shn format offers fuller sound than mp3's which you've mentioned http://www.furthurnet.org/guyforget/shnfaq.html

I think it would be better to have all the best songs in one place. Where they are easy to download and you don't have to search.
It's also a more efficient way than sending out CD's, I would think. It just requires some nice people to donate some hosting space. I would be willing to host two songs from the list.

I don't know much about the technical side of recordings so can you explain in plain english about the shn format vs the mp3 and what the hell is mp5?

sorry but to true deadheads they're alllllll the best songs.
Shn's are a lossless file compression format saving considerable storage space over wavs . you decode shns to wav to burn onto cdr with a conversion tool such as MKW act which is a free download . you just drag and drop the shn and out comes a wav ready to burn. mp3's considerably diminish the sound quality of the original source signal by cutting off data to shrink the file size. so if you for instance want to obtain say GD 1977-06-09 Winterland the highest quality source is easily available in shn form which has been taken from digital tape made from the master reel . So you see to then convert that source to MP3 would be to significantly diminish the amount of data contained in the signal thru the compressing processs resulting in a very noticeable loss in the final product. In fact in full time trading circles you are warned and admonished not to introduce any mp3 genrations into a lineage you plan on trading without making that fact clearly understaood. .the GDLive site really is the kind of site cyberbeast seems to be talking about weather he can see it or not. hosting a site with just a few "best" songs is a start but when you have whole shows from which to choose and CDrs are so cheap that might soon prove to be inadequate. as you can see from the collection i've amased the music can become quite addictive when you're exposed to it with any regularity. I don't wnat to come off as some authority but i've been involved with this for a while now and just wanted to share some insights.

It's strange hearing people talk about huge quality losses when it comes to mp3. If I encode in 256kbps I really don't notice much quality difference, unless you have a $5000 stereo tower. It brings the filesize down a lot.

I've downloaded hundreds of hours from GDlive mostly mp3 because it's easier than having to use the shorten software to un compress the shn files, but now that I know there is a quality difference I'll start downloading more and more shn files.

Thanks!

Sorry Pala but I've got to veto that Jack Straw from 10/19/71, it's nice but in it's early incarnation Bobby's singing all of what will become Jerry's lines!

Hope you understand!

Still need one more song!

Indeed.  I haven't listened to it yet-just downloaded it.  I'm just trying to collect some firsts for myself - I've found the firsts of:

Here Comes Sunshine
Eyes of the World
Loose Lucy
Cryptical->The Other One :smile:
Mexicali Blues
Jack Straw
Sugar Magnolia
among others - these are all on GDLive

For more Dark Star recommendations  - go to Deadlists.com, then to Help and Resources, then to Dark Star document; this is one of the best GD pages I've seen-very extensive and helpful.  Check it out.

well i do happen to have a fairly decent Hi-Fi system at home and in the auto. AR 9's with Kefs the AR9's are about five feet tall and weigh around 100 lbs. each in the car KEFs again.I can notice the differnece between MP3s and a lossless trac weather from flac or shn even if the mp3 has a bitrate over 350 bps . I've juist made the choice to make the extra effort to have the best available. i haven't found the work to be too much. That list developed only since last Christmas.

Nope. I found out about the firsts by clicking on different songs on the Annotated Grateful Dead http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/ then going to GDLive and seeing if they've got the show. A good one for firsts is 2/9/73 Stanford (firsts are Here Comes Sunshine, Eyes, Row Jimmy, Loose Lucy, China Doll, They Love Each Other, and Wave that Flag:)).

I'll accept donations of whatever you feel you can afford to cover the cd's Jewel cases and shipping. My cost should be like $2 each so that would be cool but I'll cover the cost if anyone can't.

I didn't even exist when the Dead played the songs on "your" cd. But I do like their music and everything they did. I would love to have a copy of "your" cd. Just tell me/us when you're ready for some orders . If I can help to copy the cd and spread it in Europe, just tell me. No need to hurry... i'm not pushing or someting. Just love your idea ...

Ground rules for Volume Two choices:

The song must be either:

1) listed in my collection posted earlier in this thread
2) something I can download
3) A song that your willing to send me in a timely fashion

Some suggestions for Volume 2

Should it be late 60's hard rocking, driving music with Jerry playing lead like a mad man and Pig singing some blues?

Or....More of the 70's great music, or a mix of the two!

Right here brother. Sorry I have been slackin. Going to get my collection out today and make some recomendations. All my stuff is from the 60's and 70's which are our favorite years. I have some really tight shows. There all on cassette, but I can still use them to make recomendations.

Pala- you mentioned earlier that you really like the filmore Mountians of the Moon. You said Pigpen plays ther piano great. Just to clarify i'm pretty sure thats Tom Constantin plating organ. He was a organ player they brought in for awhile in addition to Pigpen. He played on most of the Mountians of the Moons and when he left I don't think they played it again or if they did very rarely.

Yeah, I think you're right about that. My mistake.

Up until a week or so ago, I didn't realize that they used two keyboardists at some points (Constantin and Pigpen in the late 60's and Pigpen and Keith from about 70-72, when Pigpen died).

i would really like to hear the second volume. it is gonna be incredible, with all late 60's stuff. i haven't heard too much of the stuff before 69, but the stuff i have heard is INCREDIBLE! i will make a cover within the next week. im gonna title it something like volume 2: the early years.

Screw 60's and 70's, early eighties smacked out Jerry is the best. So dark and deep yet still gets me high with Brent going crazy. I'll throw 12-09-81 estimated on the list cause thats what I'm listening to right now and it rawks!! An Alabama Getaway from the same time period would be super-dank. P.S. any heads out there catch this last Other Ones tour, or this summer's dead tour?

Funny, I love the band so dearly but If i can hear Brent's voice I usually dont listen to it again. he got a little crazy there and started to sing above Jerry, after that it was death to Brent in my book. Poor choice of words I know.

After 8 years on tour and knowing thousands of Deadheads I would have to say that you are pretty much on your own in your choice of the Deads best years. Jesus man the early 80's were absolutly horrible. Sure there was a good show here and there ,but on an average they were in a bad period musically IMHO. Luckily they started to pull out and get more consistently better in the mid 80's. Everybodys got a right to like what they want and i'm not trying to be an asshole, but I have never heard anybody say that the early 80's were the best. Jerry was so doped up on herion he didn't know what band he was in, Brent wasn't fitting in at all, and Phil was battleing the bottle. Very dark period musically. Like I said there were a few good shows ,but they were few and far between.IMO

Just bought view from the Vault's newest release, a pair of shows from July 87 and I think the first one is flat out bad. Uninspired at best, the second one I haven't gotten to yet but the first one was so bad I took it out to listen to some 70's Winterland show. Jerry just isn't there, I don't know what the fuck is up but I don't feel that usuall warm pleasent ear zipping presence.

Yeah I was at those shows. I couldn't belive they released them on DVD. During the 80's and some in the 90's you could really tell when Jerry was struggling. You could almost see the monkey on his back and you could definitly hear it in his playing. It still wasn't anywere near as bad as the early 80's. I love Jerry as much as anyone on this planet and when I talk about the bad times i'm not puting the man down. He was only human ,but what he did for us all was trully magical.

i have found i just dont like those view from the vault tapes, they pick some pretty bad shows generally. and chinacat, i completely agree with you, as does most of the dead-listening community. i type this as i listen to 85-11-02, and the show seems decent, but the vocals seem a little bit weak. nothing like the earlier decades' shows, and definitely a whole lot better than the early 80's shows i've heard. may the four winds blow you safely home...

Yes those were the great years, just recently I've been listening to some 90's stuff...."Post Brent of course as I can't listen to his voice" and some good stuff is there as well but I have lots of material in those great years which I have not even heard yet so I'll back burner the 90's for now.

Im in awe of the fact that I was at some of the greatest shows of all time and the only menory I have of it is a tiny piece of some event that happened. I remember so little of the actual music that I saw live, that bums me out a bit.

What I tend to remember is levels of greatness associated with a certain show. I know that in 1977 There was a great show at the War Memorial in Rochester NY! Don't ask me what was played!

I remember a show at the Spectrum in Phil. in 78 where Phil sang on Truckin and that was a treat cause I don't remember seeing him even having a mike before that.

I remember....sorry for the rambling.................

2 nights at the Beacon followed by 3 nights at the Capitol sometimes in 1976 and later that same year a real party at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City! I made some Hells Angel friends that day and they kept me well oiled!

Man I was a crazy bastard in those days

Yeah its little fractals of memories. My years on the road seem like a swirling vortex of bits of golden moments. All those special times woven into a tapestry of a life that was beyond description. I feel very Grateful to have been able to see the Dead. Throughout all of history of man I can think of no other place were I would have rather been than in front of Jerry as he opened my heart and lead us to the promised land.
If I die tommorow I will be ok because the Grateful Dead has made my life more rich and full than I ever thought possible. The christians can have their second coming. Nothing will ever touch the spirituality of a Grateful Dead concert. Hell mabye the Dead was the second coming.

:heart:There was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert

One of many memorys- The Jerry garcia Band at the Warfield Theater on Market st. In San Fran. Rainy winter night in San Francisco and only family in attendance. He rocked so fuckin hard. People were ripping their close off and screwing in the balcony. Everybody squirting liquid all over the crowd. The music was so on. You could tell Jerry wasn't even playing that night, he was being played. I remember everybody had tears of joy and as I looked up at Jerry he had tears rolling off his beard and a smile that beamed pure bliss. Just a fuckin incredible night. He played for ever. Then when he was done we poored out on Market st. Everybody was hugging and the energy was incredible. Even the cops were touched by it. They were all smiling and wishing they had been apart of what had just happened inside. We walked all the way up to the haight that night. Hell I had so much energy I could have swam across the pacific ocean. Just one of many memorys I will always cherish.

:heart:God Bless The Grateful Dead

One more story then i'll shut up.

Red Rocks late 80's- It was a special night. Everybody was dosed to the brink and you could see the energy. Then the band came out and played. Immediatly we all began to dissolve. You could see the sky open up and the divine energy flow down from heaven through the music and link us all to the eternal one. Then I remember seeing everything dissolve and on the stage there was a swirling vortex. Out of the vortex came a vision of Jesus Christ on the cross. I started crying.(I wasn't a christain or raised as one).  After a few moments the music intensified and Jesus ripped himself free of the spikes holding him to the cross. Then he start twirling and dancing in beautiful synchronisity to the music. Dissolving into the crowd. Swirling through us all and opening our heart chakra's. As I was leaving the show I saw people balling like little kids. People were healed that night. Then I realized that many others had seen the same thing and it wasn't just a hallucination I had.

The Grateful Dead is beyond any religion. On a good night when the conditions were right it allowed people to have direct communion with the divine. We would all melt into one. A giant ball of love pulsating. Melting in the fountian of creation. The children of God, reuniting with god, and for a short time becoming one with God.Having a religous experiance is a life changing event, but having one with thousands of other people is a massive cosmic event that is unmached in all of history. I stop now because it was just beyond words. All I can say is death is going to be fantastic.

  ...WOW is all I can say to that chinacat.  Now I am 100% positive that I am living in the wrong time and place.  I can only dream of what all of those wonderful nights must have been like.  I find that every one of your posts, whether it be about the Grateful Dead, LSD, spirituality, or anything for that matter, to be some of the most interesting and enlightening words I have ever heard spoken.  Thank you so very much for posting around here, you are truly an asset to the shroomery.  I have learned many things from you that I would never get to experience if you were not around.  I only wish I could have been around when it was all going down.  Keep on telling as many stories as you can manage, I'm sure everyone would love to hear them all.  On another note, send my love to the Family for their constant dedication over the years, their work is greatly appreciated.  Peace  :sun:

Chinacat, great stories as always. You should write a book or something
Too bad I wasn't there to experience those days.

I was just wondering. Were there ever people who had bad trips at those events? If so, how many, and what did people do to help them?

From time to time someone would freak out a bit but not very often and usually it was short lived. It was not easy to have a bad trip when you were surrounded by so many loving and caring people. Not to mention the sound of jerry's voice and the sounds of his guitar filling the air. Often times you would see people crying but usually they were tears of Joy!

Sometimes people would become overwhelmed by the depth of the music and have a hard time absorbing the shear beauty of what they were experiencing!

Good idea.
Also what songs are you looking for on the new CD. If your going to make another CD of 67-78 then I have plenty of tapes that I can suggest songs from.

Also how about a Jerry Band CD. Lots of great music from Jerry Band. Even in the years that the Dead were struggling Jerry Band put on some stellar shows. Mabye a Acoustic one two.(Oregon State prison

China I love the idea of a Jerry Band CD!
just the Oregon State prison tape is such a gem (how about that Rubin and Cherise where Jerry says that he doesn't think he'll remember all the words then nails it!)

I'm real easy so should the second CD be a Jerry Band CD?

Or something from the early days 1965-1970!

I myself love the jerry band idea

I'll let my brother Chinacat decide

I love all you guys so much! It's the next best thing to the love in the air at a dead show.

Chinacat, Should I start a new thread?

i'd love to get a copy of this mix of the greatest dead stormers... please let me know if i can send some blank cdr's or money to get copys of this mix!
unfortunately i never got to see the dead live, and didnt really get into them until 94/95 (im 24 years old). i was supposed to go to the last show at RFK right before he passed but it fell through. im been regretting it ever since.. if only i had gone to that show and gotten a chance to see jerry perform :frown:
i personally love all of the deads music, but like the early stuff (69-71) a little more. i'd love to hear something live that they put on "anthem of the sun" on this cd... like new potato caboose, or alligator. my favorite song by them is definitely the eleven.
