Why was 1977 such a good time for live recordings in your opinion?
I'm still a newbie compared to you heads, but it seems to me that the best times were the late 60's/early 70's.

There were lots of "special" years 73 comes to mind too!
But for me I started touring in 1977 so it has some real meaning for me, however in May of 77 the Dead did a run of shows that's regarded as of the best they ever did.
It actually started out April when the dead came to the east coast for a show at The Spectrum in Pa. on April 22nd. I caught up with them on April 25th for three nights at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ a great venue small but with fabulous acoustics. then it was five nights at the Palladium in NYC....Very special shows indeed ....... Lots of window pane around at the time!!!!!
We then followed them to New haven and Boston and then to Ithaca NY for what is commonly regarded as one of their best shows ever at Cornell university's Barton Hall.....That was on May 8th on the 9th we were in Buffalo for another gem of a show!We caught back up with them at the end of the month for one night shows in Richmond and Baltimore and then back to Hartford (a venue I never cared for)
But we had lots of microdots for those shows !!!!

hey Rip - I'll talk to my boss about giving us some hosting space - I'm sure he'd be up for it (he's a huge deadhead - did quite a bit of touring during the last couple of years himself). I've got copies of volume 2 and volume 3 (the JGB one and the early years), but i'm afraid that both copies of mine have deteriorated a bit - i was trying to rip them the other day and I know at least one track on volume 3 didn't copy properly... let me talk to him tomorrow and i'll get back to you - i might be able to just download the tracks that are scratched on my copies, and then put them up online...
but I really dig KC's idea for volume 5... Brent was one of my favorite key players for the Dead. lets get that volume 4 finished first, though!

Check out: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/12/arts/music/12ratl.html?_r=1
Quote:
Almost 10 years after the [Barton Hall 5-8-1977] concert, a cache of soundboard tapes made by Betty Cantor-Jackson, the Dead’s live recording engineer, were scattered far and wide when her house in Nicasio, Calif., went into foreclosure and her possessions were sold at public auction.
The sound quality of the “Betty Boards,” which began circulating in 1987, was exceptional: so good that for the initiates, it nearly reinvented listening. She made her own stereo mix on a separate feed from the house P.A. mix, strictly for posterity, and she considered the mixes from 1977 among her best. (“I want you to be inside the music,” she once said of her audio ideal. “I don’t want stereos playing at you, I want you to be in there, I want it around you.”) The Cornell show was the first widely circulated tape to sound that good.
Also, some cool pictures: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/04/10/arts/20090410-grateful-dead-user-photos.html#/0
Double also, here's the .TORRENT for the Shroomery Pic's Volume II that I just uploaded today:
