Have you tried to grow them indoors?

Yeah Tom's right but everyone has known for a long time that they related to yeasts. But Gary Novak says its the secret to growing them and a bunch of other "fruitless" stuff.
All which lack any functional or procedural mechanisms. It's logical to investigate the plant hormones that are encountered.

The chemicals that dictate what trees or plants that the morels associate with or can tolerate are known as Glycosides.
Apparently the glycosides that elm, maple, ash and whatnot are not toxic to morels but are toxic to other fungi that are pathogens and predators upon the morels.

No, I've been stuck with the same luck as everyone else here that hasn't used the plant hormones.
I've been interested in getting them in order to experiment but they are too expensive.

I have some GA3 in the fridge that I ordered for my fruitless truffle experiment.  So that's a start.  Look to eBay.  Science supply houses are a racket.

My theory actually was proven however,
I had been watching and recording weather conditions during the summers of the past 9 years 2005 - 2014
In 2007 we had an extremely long and bad drought caused the trees everywhere to have leaves that were yellowed, everything went brown in the fall.
In the spring of 2008 an unusual circumstance happened. The yellow morels that I found were extremely huge 14" inches high, 5-6" inches in width.
Then in the summer of 2008 it was extremely wet and cool the whole extent of the summer.
Then in the spring of 2009 only one large yellow morel was found and very few if any small deliciosa, however black morels were abundant.
The summer of 2009 was once again a wet cool summer
The spring of 2010 was once again abundant with black morels but no yellow morels at all.
The summer of 2010 was once again wet and cool.
The spring of 2011 was extremely wet few black morels and not very many deliciosa and absolutely no large yellow morels in the woods. However in the honeysuckle bush fields and thickets in a different place, there were large yellow morels.
summer of 2011 was hot and somewhat dry
spring of 2012 had a few large morels
FINALLY the summer of 2012 was another major drought and in the spring of 2013 I once again found huge monster morels.
Summer of 2013 was mild and wet again.
However spring of 2014 found another load of large morels
Summer of 2014 wet and cool again.
Spring of 2015 doesn't look good.

However I don't think it was just the trees that were supplying what the huge morels needed recently because I discovered that there were thorn bushes in those locations. And that location was the only location that produced huge morels. The thorn bushes turned out to be a type of wild rose or rosa multiflora. The huge morels I picked actually cost me a poke in the hand from the thorns too.

Well I guess I'll fire my cultures back up.  I've been working off a spore printed plate (like one you eat off of) for two years now.  Never gone past grain tho.  My dream is to inoculate like an acre of hill side.

Well I would advise not just looking for the right trees but in addition to the right trees look for ones that have rosa multiflora or a type of wild rose bush underneath them. That will greatly increase your chances.

And I would plant cultures in the spring.

Haha I found two in my front yard under a pine tree which alerted me to their presence.  Found a few under some privet.  I live at the base of a plateau and up top and along the sides they seem associated with poplar trees but only in this patch of old growth forest.

So if the sclerotic grows off the tree, then how is the guy growing them indoors on trays?  With that chemical you mentioned?  So what your saying is ABA mimics the chemical normally given off by the trees during drought or extreme heat? And that is transported from the tree to the ground by leaves falling?

Time to try and find my plant biology textbook!  I think he's implying that the shrooms get them thru their mycorrhizal associations.

ABA is produced in the roots first. Then its transported to the leaves via the sap but excess should end up back in the roots during the fall.

Right! but its a facultative association meaning that they can grow without the tree so long as they get the substance they need for proper growth.

But let me make it clear the rosa multiflora isn't necessary to grow morels BUT it is necessary for HUGE gigantic yellow M. Esculenta.

The HUGE esculenta I found were 14" x 6" inch in dimensions, very thick stipes 1/8" inch thickness or more. The caps were highly convoluted and extremely densely convoluted.

Highly convoluted and near Rosa multiflora and sugar maple trees.

Interesting, Maybe having an indoor tree sapling exposed to dryer conditions than normal would produce this then.  Then the falling leaves can be collected, processed to degrade quickly and scattered around existing sclerotic that was produced from a culture?

lol,  I guess ill just have to try it out.  Trial and error!

Could you extract the sap from the trees during the appropriate times of the year and give that to the morels? That is an idea I have been toying with for other mycorrhizal species.

If you look close you will see the thorn on one of those twigs.
