Carlos Castaneda.

I still find all the important things in his first four books to be the best written guild for life I've ever read.  But the books are written as a story to hook readers, so a lot of it is fantasy. But if your eyes are open to his "path".  In his path there are no gurus, just individuals trying to live as warriors and doing their best to take life as a challenge.

His reliance on his mentors to such a degree makes me wonder if I read the same books.  Without Don Juan or Don Genaro he was a lost puppy.  So I guess it depends on what you mean by "guru".

I took his musings on death to heart at an early age.  Can't remember exactly which shoulder he is supposed to be lurking over but it doesn't really matter.  That being said most of what he wrote was utter bullshit.  The Nagual my ass.

Yes using death as an advisor

And taking responsibility for ones actions.

And acting rather than talking. 

That's just the few that popped into my head.  I'm very stoned right at the moment.

That was just one of the things I found valuable.

Taking responsibility for your actions was another one that made sense to me.

Losing self importance

Becoming a hunter

Being inaccessible

Disrupting the routines of life

The mood of a warrior

Stopping the world.

So in the midst of the nonsense that has quickly become of this thread, I just wanted to say that my philosophy professor recommended me this guy as an author I may enjoy after I told him that I like psychedelics.  This professor was the coolest dude, he told me how he used to take LSD back in the day and go to Dead shows and how his friend sold cocaine, which means my professor did cocaine.  I haven't checked out this Carlos guys books yet but now that my buddy Icelander is also recommending them maybe I should check them out.  I think before my professor knew I did drugs, but after he knew I was better at critical thinking than the rest of my peers and I was one of the "other ones" and not your average dude, he recommended me a couple books by Hesse.  Which hit home for me.  So maybe I should check these books out by Carlos.  I assume there is maybe some drug use in these books and other adult content?  Is drug use adult content?

They are basically fictional stories about different guys finding their path in life or something to that extent?  I don't know that much about these books.  Yes I know I can look it up and I'm going to do that in a minute but I'm wondering what your personal thoughts are and why these books stand out to you?

The general consensus among most people I've talked to or read -- especially among the academic community -- is that Castaneda was a total phony.  Meaning that he was not a legitimate anthropologist, that everything in the books was misrepresented if not fabricated, and that Don Juan never even existed.  You can do a very easy google search to read more about this perspective.  "Criticisms of Castaneda" maybe.

On the other hand, I too have read the books, and if they are made up, Castaneda is some kind of genius.  To cook up such interesting, deep and resonant ideas is, in my opinion, exceptionally clever.  The books are very good, and impart a lot of genuine wisdom.

But many serious anthropologists, especially those who worked with the Yaqui, can point out jarring flaws and inconsistencies on virtually every page of his books.

So, I think in fairness to Castaneda, they are quite good books, but only taken as fiction.  They are not legitimate works of anthropology, and there was no true Don Juan.

Yea.  First he recommended Demian, and then he said after that read Steppenwolf, and then Siddhartha last.  I still haven't finished Siddhartha.... :facepalm:

That's probably a good reflection of where I'm at in life, LOL.





So these Carlos books were supposedly non-fiction, but really they are most likely fiction?  I don't really care if they are true or not if they are cool stories then I would be interested in reading them.

Steppenwolf explained my life to me.  The movie of the novel is pretty amazing, with Max Von Sydow as Harry.  I've watched that movie a dozen times and read the book several times.

I should see the movie because the end of the book was strange and confusing to me, although I understood it for the most part.  That girl he met, Hermine or whatever, how she complemented him reminded me of this one girl I once knew.  In a way it really explained my life to me too.  I wish I could do cocaine as often as he did though lol.

If I were to start with a Castaneda book, which one should I read first?  Which one is the best?  Is there an "order" to them?
