Why is Chicago such a War Zone?

didn't know about this much until just recently. 82 people shot during 4th of july weekend, during a 3-day period. it's been given the nickname "chiraq". military officials have deployed troops, declaring martial law in the densely populated city.

more or less yes. particularly handguns - flat out banned.

Chicago is actually really, really fucking cool, it's a true metropolis. The entire downtown is/was one of the coolest places I'v visited so far. But yeah, the bad areas, they're virtual war zones. Crime is obviously sky high in the downtrodden areas of Chicago.

My answer is drug prohibition. These young kids with shitty schools and a culture that has no value in higher learning socially cohesive behavior grow up and have 2 options: sell drugs and get involved with gangster life where they can feel cool being a be a badass while potentially making really good money, or work one or two min wage jobs to barely get by. Easy choice.

Now imagine if that $$ incentive of selling drugs wasnt there. No money would come into those neighborhoods and their only option would be to get out if they wanted to live better.

And gang culture in Chicago is enormous. It's right up there with prime LA & Oakland gang culture.

It's amusing to me, the impressions people throughout the country have of Chicago.  Chicago isnt as bad or dangerous as it's made out to be.  There are areas best avoided for certain, and don't get me wrong 80 some odd deaths is a lot but it's pretty much just all gang related shit. 

Chicago is america's heart and a big hub for drugs.  Of course it's no secret drugs and gangs go hand in hand.  We have our poverty stricken areas where crime is prevalent like any other big city.  The thing is that the economy has been so fucked creating a larger gap between the "haves and have nots."  That creates incentive for the poor in troubled ares to sell drugs, join gangs, etc., ant that obviously makes things overall more violent.  This is the case more so than ever.

Another aspect to consider is that as a liberal/democrat ran city you have these strict gun laws.  And the correlation between gun violence and strict gun laws in an area is something that even the most staunch anti-gun types cant deny.  (I'm not going to entertain any gun debate fueled posts so chill if you're of the anti-gun persuasion)

Also for the record, mayor Emanuel is a shit head.

one of my best friends went to depaul in chicago....when i moved west i stopped at his place for a night and it was fucking awesome

we went to a local deep dish pizza place that was fucking amazing...got drunk, walked around the city, down to lake michigan, by the biograph theater where john dillinger was shot and killed

some of the architecture was beautiful

I tell people this all the time. Chicago is greatness. I have no ties at all to the city other than visiting a couple of times so it's not like I'm being biased here. I'm not from Chicago, nor do I have any family in Chicago. But each time I went it was amazing and I couldn't wait to go back.

The idea that lax handgun laws somehow stop crime is idiotic. Maybe the laws on illegal guns are too soft. If you make 1000 dollars a day selling crack a 6 month stint in prison seems worth it.

In an interview I saw recently online, they were saying that one of the reasons its so crazy is that the places where people used to live were all torn down and thousands of people were relocated, mixing up different gangs and now there is a struggle for territory.

You should google some stuff on Cabrini Green. Old Chicago projects/neighborhood. My Pops told me about it -- said he took the subway to the wrong place (this I think was back in the 80's). He was in Chicago on business. Climbed the steps out of the subway and said it was infinitely times more crazy & insane than any movie could make a hood look.

Anyway these projects were considered by the media to be the worst and most violent in the country. It got so bad that they literally took a wrecking ball to the entire area and wiped it from existence.

episode 3 made me tear up a little.  I know vice slants things emotionally, but that guy seems like an angel. especially in like another one it shows him buying food for one of the families.




only somewhat related, that vice news reporter "danny gold" is fucking crazy.  I was very suprised he's not famous.  when you google search his name almost nothing comes up.  That guy is a fucking boss though.  He's been like involved in more gun battles and missles and shit than most military i imagine.  like the middle east, africa, those island thing (like trinidad or whatever), south america.  He does all the dangerous stuff for vice, and he's pretty fucking gutsy and baller.

I watched one the other day where he was in sudan, and like a military convoy he was with got ambushed and they fucking killed a general like right next to him.

I don't believe there is such thing as strict gun laws in this country, ergo, we have no idea what strict gun laws might or might not accomplish.
