Which G did you end up getting? Have you fired it much? I had to run into the bar today and cover a shift after two guys quit under 'odd' circumstances last night, and I grabbed my G23 to take in with me in case some shit went down. Put some good grips on it, some trijicon or mepro sights and it'll be a darn nice gun.
Still not a SIG, though
The 17.. I just finished cleaning it and im shooting it tomorrow.
I hear good things about sigs i really dont like how they look but i'll probably end up liking them, hell i used to absolutly hate Glocks.Just not anytime soon 4 new guns in 2 weeks this shit is adictive!

What 'generation' glock is it? Does it have rails and a metal tag on the underside of the frame with the S/N? The 3rd Gen Glocks are pretty damn nice. I'd definately drop some night sights in it.

shotguns are a little big for hallways small rooms, in the middle of the night, when you still sleepy, and it could jam, which a 6 shot cant.
[rambo part]yeah, if you're going to be moving around and clearing rooms, a handgun can be good. unless you have an absolute need to do that though, i think their lack of power makes them undesirable for home defense. a shot from a handgun has a very low chance of immediately incapacitating someone, especially when they are high on adrenaline and who knows what else, and you are feeling just a bit shaky. a shotgun on the other hand will stop someone very fast.
i suppose it depends on your strategy. i think it's a terrible idea to go around trying to clear rooms. i say just get your weapon ready, call the cops, pick a defensive position, and sit tight. you should be in the dark, covering a lit area through which an intruder must pass to endanger you. a stairway is a good choke point. no need to go creeping around from room to room when you're at the top of the stairs waiting in the shadows with a shotgun and the only way up is by passing through the lit landing below. it depends on living situation and home layout though, so something like that isn't possible for everyone. most of the "experts" on this though will agree that a shotgun is generally best for home defense (it's also the best for hunting, and for me, recreation).[/rambo part]
again to the original poster... the 1911 is a classic. it's my understanding that most can use a good once over by a competent gunsmith out of the box. kimbers are very nice. it's a good all around pistol if you're going to buy just one gun. a .357 revolver is another good choice because it's reliable and you have a choice of loading it with lighter .38 rounds for at the range.
