Is there any website that compares guns in depth, for the purposes of education? I'm looking but all I'm finding are stores.

I was out of town, she was aparently trying to see how tough she looked with the gun, I keep it loaded and ready for use, she blew a huge hole in it, bits of copper were imbedded in the wall, never found the lead. she called me crying about it, wouldnt tell me what happened on the phone so I puzzled over it for 3 days... the strange part, the couple living with us never woke up...
the gun now resides in the safe that she doesnt have a combination for, lest I wake up feeling like a toilet

Yea, 1911's are fantastic for aftermarketing. The only "problem" with SIG's is that they are made about as good as possible in the factory, not much need to tweak 'em out. My 1911 has a Bar-Sto match grade barrel, a tungsten guide rod and I extended the mag release.
Also, imo, home defense isn't a shotgun situation, it's a pistol situation. You need to be able to open doors, use your flashlight, push things around and still have positive control of your firearm.

you dont need to tweak any decent gun, most will hit within a couple inches if you're a decent shot and the sights are on. the problem with sigs is that sig makes sig parts and they dont make many parts, silly assed patent laws... if enough people wanted custom parts for a sig the market would open a bit. once the smithing and parts are there, you'll see what that gun can do.
most parts are to improve the handling as much as the accuracy and then theres the cosmetic parts that just make it look crappy

I can't think of anything that I'd need for my SIG. I put Hogue grips on all of my guns, except a Kimber Compact 1911 that has Crimson Trace on it. My SIG, OOTB, shoots a tighter group at 25 feet from the bench than my friends customized Kimber.
A guy over at sigforum does custom smithing for SIG's, I shoot competitions with a 1911, or a P229, that had the factory "Action Enhancement Package", new guide rod and hogue grips. The .40S&W out of a P229 has hardly any recoil and with the heavier guide rods it's really quick back on target, even with higher power loads. The .357SIG shoots damn good out of the gun with the new guide rods.
I prefer reliability over accuracy. Like my M1A, so many guys do so much to make their guns shoot a 1/4MOA but the guns lose some reliability. My M1A is pretty much all stock, minus a free floated barrel and the EO Tech on it.

my mom had an old garand before the NFA laws were passed, with an auto rifle people should be thrilled with 1/2 MOA, theer are people that do a few custom parts and smithing for SIG but it's still a fairly closed market
my .45 was the best shooting and most accurate I've had out of the box, a chap ass little makarov was a close second but it shot like shit

Well I differ I like the "add ons" like,
deep mag well,
Top serrations, and sides,
full checkering around the grip,
Square and checkering of the Trigger guard,
checkering of the heal
Ambidextrous safety, with serrations
While it depends on the intend use, I do suggest some custom work.

.50 Cal DESERT EAGLE
No doubt about it. I've wanted one ever since I knew that they existed.
I've got no problem worrying about the recoil because I fire large handguns all of the time. My largest is a 30-30 Thompson Center contender pistol with a 14 inch bull barrel. That gun has given a few of my friends and family black eyes, busted lips and bloody noses because they didn't hold it correctly.
A Desert Eagle would make a fine new addition to my collection.
