This guy's first grow
    #19912275 -

Hello people of Shroomery! This is my first grow and hopefully not the last. I would like to say first that I love this place. It's nice to go somewhere where I don't feel like such an outsider. Been reading some of the other threads and it's awesome to see there's like minded individuals out there. So here's what I've got and done so far:

I'll try to post pics, seems like it's a confusing thing to do around here.

I'm following this tek found here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18381574

So far so good:

I made several mistakes starting out. I ordered spores from a non sponser. Was totally unaware at the time of the shroomery. I was reading and following fungifacts. Then the verm I purchased was a very fine, sand like grade. It kept clogging my needles up when inoculating. Plus it settled down into the sides of my jars when using it as a contam barrier. So going forward I'm just gonna use the Epsoma organic brand. I just crush some up in a sandwich bag to make the contam barrier a bit finer.

Worst mistake I made was not reading and researching enough before starting. I bought more shit that I didn't use, then had to go back and buy things that I did need. Oh well, lesson learned.

http://

Here's my setup while colonizing. I've got two 26w 1350lumens daylight bulbs shining down at 12/12 intervals. I also have a small humidifier running keeping the RH in the room between 50-63%. I picked it up after never getting a reading above 35% and thought it may help with things. An oil heater is keeping the temps between 73-77F.

I inoc'ed the 5 tall 1/2 pints and 3 short, 9oz glass jars on 04/18. I started seeing growth on the 23rd. Shit came on quick!!! I inoc'ed 8 wide mouth 1/2 pints on 04/26 so hopefully they do just as well.

I built my SGFC just like the one in the tek I'm following. Using a 3mm bit on the bottom and 4-5 inches up the sides spaced 1 inch apart. Then a 6mm bit over the rest spaced 2 inches apart. My lid was not see through so I cut out the middle and used double sided tape to put clear window plastic in it's place. Then heated a screwdriver to make my holes.

Has anyone used a FC like this? With more, smaller holes on bottom and sides where the perlite will be. Also my size is 19 gallon. Roughly 26x18x13. I may go buy a different container that stands taller than this one. Just curious if anyone has any experience using one built this way.

This place really is awesome. Many thanks to those of you who help me and other noobs get started on this enlightening hobby. Cheers

ya know, I've been thinking about that kind'a design, unless a bunch of folks come on here say'n not to, JUST DO IT!!!!

...and post results! I suspect it'll dry out to quick, but I dunno

edit: I wonder if the little holes are 1/4 the size of the bigger holes, and you have 4X the little holes than you would small holes...would that not be the same?

from what I understand, having more, smaller holes won't change the way the SGFC works. The idea being you're still covering the same surface area. The person who wrote the tek said they did it because it would keep perlite and water from falling out the bottom.

I don't see why your fruiting chamber wouldn't work, you still have the same amount of open surface area.  If yours ends up working good I might build my next one like yours I hate getting perlite everywhere.

everything else in your setup looks good. Make sure you dunk and roll your cakes.

and welcome to the shroomery

You could use window screening to keep it from falling out too with the normal size holes.

I made my SGFC in this way as well.  The thread that suggested this method was posted by a user called clubbase.  It made perfect sense to me when I read it.  It was only after I had drilled all of my holes that I remembered what the difference in the surface area of the holes would be.  I haven't had a chance to try out my FC yet, but we shall see.  Clubbase said in his post that he was experienced at growing even though he hadn't put up many posts.  He had some pics of some nice fruits from PF cakes in his thread. I guess I will just have to wait and see how this thing works.

If those trays were sitting directly on the perlite they would have been blocking a fair amount of air currents. Next time try to raise them up a bit with jar rings so more of the air can flow up from the perlite into the chamber. This will also help keep RH higher.

Yah you just had a shitty pin set up top because all your pins were on the bottom. Use a liner next time.

Man it's so awesome to come home from work and read the feedback and suggestions. Quexl with his window screen on bottom is genius level. Here I was gonna try and place several baking pans underneath but that, sir, is a wonderful idea.

I also think I'll go ahead and build another chamber following RR's specs. Plus I can buy one that stands taller. This shit is so much fun to do anyways. Then when I get several jars fully colonized I'll do a side by side comparison. I did pick up some tall and sturdy plastic cups that I plan on using to raise the FC up off the shelf I'll place it on. I figured I can drill holes in these cups so fresh air can still flow through the holes on the bottom that a brick or other item would cover up.

So another question and a concern...

Is there a way to do a test run with the FC? Just to see if it is working properly. And I'm concerned about being gone for 12hrs a day.  Leave for work at 6pm and get home around 6am. This gonna affect fruiting negatively? Not being able to fan and mist during those hours. I've read being gone 10-14hrs won't hurt, but how about when it's like that 5 or 6 days a week? I do plan on misting and fanning 3x's a day. 6pm, 6am, 12pm. I'll have to set my alarm and get up at noon to do that, but fuck it man, I'm sure it'll pay off.

Thanks for the advice Knothead, I'll take any and all constructive criticisms. And for the welcome TheApprentice, karp, and the rest of ya!

If you build your SGFC to specs there should be no need to test it. Misting every 12 hours should be fine. Lots of people have jobs and still manage to grow in a SGFC.
