ok i got 2 maztec cakes from a foaf and i put them in a terrarium and its pretty constant temp between 70 and 72. using perlite and its pretty humid in there; 2 of teh walls are condensed so you can only see blurry colors thru them and the other 2 are a little less but what im looking at is that after 2 days there were hyphial (pardon spelling) knots which eventually grew in size and a few more popped up. theyve been in terrarium for 5 days now and they kind of resemble pins but its more like they are just bulges and are not forming anything but are growing larger and 1 whole side of a cake has completely fluffed out with this stuff. i was expecting them to grow outward into pins, not just gain mass and engulf my cakes. any comments on this and what could be causing them? theyre BRF/verm cakes if it makes a difference.

Naughty mycelium with ADD... ;) just kick back and let them be tempermental, if you act overly concerned they will keep it up. They'll come around with time and patience.

Bring the temperature up to 75-79 degrees and you will be happier.

It suprises me how few people seem to make this observation: A year or two, maybe three ago at the shroomery it was theorised, and often told to people asking similar questions like yours that if a cake is just growing outwards (mycellium getting really fluffy growing outwards that the humidity is too high. Now when I had your problem, I decreased the humidity and found it stopped. So atleast in my experience it does work. Your temp is secondary to the humidity right now, thats the problem. Just get rid of some of that perlite, or strain it.. do something to bring it down. You definitely have too much if you can hardly see your cakes through the terrarium

hmm. i was under the impression that cakes require 98% humidity and that overhumidification was very hard to achieve when doing cakes. thank you for the info though; i was unsure if that was a cause of over or under humidification.

accd'g to the Father of the cake method, Mr. PF, you are correct. Over humidification IS hard to achieve. Cakes DO need as close to 100% humidity as you can get. Sit tight. If you wait--they will come.
