Yes, I was just about to post the same question: "is the drill hole + straw tek a viable substitute for casing?"So, if someone could answer, it would greatly please two fellow Shroomerites at once. Let's say you birth a standard PF cake, and let it begin fruiting in a terrarium without any casing. After the first flush, if one plans on drilling a hole (w/sterilized drillbit) and inserting a straw to add more moisture as needed, is some kind of casing tek also required?? Would doing the drillhole+straw tek in addition to the PF double-ended casing tek be overkill, or (at worse), HARMFUL in any way? thanks c

How about injecting sterilized rice-starch water into the straws and keeping the straws covered? Would this revitalize an old cake?

i think i will most likely inject some h2o2( peroxide) into my cakes if they arent pefectly moist already,or maybe some artificial sweetener in the water or h2o2 one injects into the cakes would be good (see post on artificial sweetener)

HEy, i am the answer to your question. Get your straws and cut them in half at an angle, so it leaves a sharp point on the ends of the straws, no just push teh straw into the cake. wait a few days before you add water. the mycelium needs to seal up around the straw. the starch may help but it will most likely cause contams. make teh sure cakes are fully coloinzed before you add these straws. this tek surely does help. www.fanaticus.com/7cakes.jpg . that is my pic. you can look through the shroomery gallery and find more pics with the straws in them, there blue straws so they stand out. Good luck

Hello all,To see the straw-tek in action, check out PF's page at: http://www.fanaticus.com/7cakes.htm It explains the process used to get those cakes in that awesome pic, 7cakes.jpg, that is mentioned above. QUESTION TIME: Will injecting straight hydrogen peroxide right from the bottle without any further dilution harm the cakes? Does this affect potency, taste, or any other nature of the fruits in any way? Safe to eat still? thanks c

Yes, that is Mycelium5150's pic... He's done some great work with cakes like that. As good as any straight grain (not including compost/straw ventures) casing I've done. He's been very successful with the straight pf-tek and he has swarn by it for a long time. That is just a very nice pic though peace camel

Damn it, Listen to yuor father kids. Dont use dextrose or h2o2 to inject into the straw. The h2o2 will have a lil volcano effect. The dextrose will clog up the straw after awhile. The mycelium will start to growinside the straw if you use dextrose. Just use distilled water, but a fully conlonized cake wont contam. I suppose you could use a lil h202 in the water, but dont be so anal, your kids will hate you for it. Just use plain ol;e tap water and boil it if your so worried. And yes that is my pic, i need to stop saying that, ppl are like i know the guy that grew that pic. Shit, yes its mine. Cakes grow them selves, and sure the hell dont case your cakes, its a sure way to fuck them up. Cactus, answer, no it wont hurt your cakes, straight peroxcide isnt really straig, its mainly water, 97% water. Well a lil less because there something in there to stablize teh h2o2, when you say inject, do you mean use a syringe and poke the cake and push some water in there, that wont happen.

Mycelium5150, are those blue straws from Jack-in-the-Box? They look just like the ones I got from there. I noticed they are nice and wide, thus hold more water. Also, you say don't do any drilling? Just push the angle-cut straw directly into the cake? Maybe that's why I had problems with mine. I followed a tek off the MMGG appendix. It said to drill holes with a sterilized bit, then insert straws. Please let me know. Thanks.------------------ Baldy

BAld, Heh, those are jack in the box straws! they seem to be the best over all. thick tough and fat. mc d's straw are good but there flimsey. The straw should be stuck in about a 1/2 inch, just dont stick it all the way through. fill teh straws to the top dailer but wait 3 days after you insert the straws to fiil, the mycelium needs to form a seal around the straw so they dont leak.

Mycelium5150,If you don't want people people making a fuss over you being the grower of the shrooms in www.fanaticus.com/7cakes.jpg maybe you should stop referring to yourself as such in posts. I for one, would like to know every detail about how those shrooms were grown. Maybe you could publish a faq and save yourself and everyone else further grief. I knew it! Those straws are the best. Even better, they are free! Just grab a handfull from the bin on your way out. A while back I posted having problems with the drinking-straw tek. Now I'll have to try again using your advice. Thanks.------------------ Baldy

dilute your 3% hydrogen peroxide 1/20 (peroxide/water). Use it to fill straws after each flush. Works great. Don't use straight H2O2. Don't use supplements.------------------ -From a registered Mad Scientist "From a certain point of view" -Jedi Master Obiwan Kenobi (also a Mad Scientist tm)
