It's documented in the MMGG...

Supposedly when your cakes begin to stop fruiting, you can "drill" (poke? stab?) a hole in the top of the cake and insert a straw in it. Daily you can add an amount of distilled water to these straws and it is supposed to increase flush by giving the innards of the cake some fresh nutrition. Read through the MMGG and look for it there.

The girl he had dragged along to the pub with him had grown to loathe him dearly over the last hour, and it would probably have been a great satisfaction to her to know that in a minute and a half or so he would suddenly evaporate into a whiff of hydrogen, ozone, and carbon monoxide. However, when the moment came she would be too busy evaporating herself to notice it.

It can be found in the MMGG appendixed teks. What brought it to my attention were the pics floating around the web of a bunch of cakes cased in this manner. The pics depict a virtual sea of mushrooms sprouting from cakes. Of course after seeing this, I had to give it a try. However, I have concluded it to be more trouble than it is worth. I did an experiment of six cakes side by side.
Three cakes were drilled and fitted with drinking straws. Three more cakes of the same strain and substrate mixture were cased with PF's double ended tek.
One straw cake and one double ended cake were placed in a perlite humidified terrarium. The others were placed in a hand sprayed terrarium with a spray shield.
It turned out to be a pain in the ass to drill the cakes. The straw must be fitted pretty tightly. It must be left alone for a couple days to let mycelium "seal" it in. Even then, if you bump your hand into the straw accidentally, it will knock it loose and it will leak water all over the top of the cake.
I flushed all six cakes twice. The first flush produced perfect, healthy and plentiful shrooms from the double enders. I was excited to see that the drinking straw cakes had many primordia covering the them. I filled the straw with water every day as the tek advised. This proved to be another problem. It is too much water. Most of the primordia aborted, leaving a few very large, heavy fruits, maybe two per cake. When harvested these mushrooms turned out to be completely water logged. They were disgusting inside and had to be chopped up to dry. On the second flush I cut the water injection in half. This is much better.
Over all, the double ended cakes did much better. They grew significantly more, and healthier fruits. They were also trouble-free. They required much less fucking-with than the straw cakes. I ended up ripping those stupid straws out of the cakes, breaking them up and casing them in small trays with a 50/50 mix on top as they should have been all along.
Remember, these are only my results from one experiment. I know those pictures of the straw-cased cakes make it very tempting to give it a try, and by all means do so. I just wanted to give you an idea of what I went through. You may have to try it on your own and come up with your own conclusions.
In my opinion, if you really want good, consistent, heavy yields, you should break up your cakes and case them ala Sea of Shrooms or the Hawk's method. Both of those teks can be found in the Grow/Find section here.

Whatever bald cuban,
The straws in the cakes are the only way to go. Just cut the straws in half at an angle so they come to a point, then just push teh straws in. Wait two days till you add water, this gives the mycelium time to recover and seal the gap that is caused by the straw. I would put the straws in a day or two after there birth. you will notice the cakes drinking alot of water once the heavy fruiting starts. its worth the time. www.fanaticus.com/7cakes.jpg
thats my pic, and most the other pics with blue straws are mine also.
so believe me i know what im talking about.

I did not say it was a bad tek. I only posted my own results. Is this not what the Shroomery is for? I still advised PappaKaps to experiment for himself to truly see the pros and cons of this method.
Don't "whatever" me.

Can u use this with the hawk eye casing tek or is this just a dumb question? Like maybe two days after birthing add a couple straws to it?
