What are the steps to using a pressure cooker?? Do I just place the straw in a bowl of distilled water and pressure cook it for 30 minutes??

Buy some straw, the easiest thing to get is Timothy hay kob from a petstore. But wheatstraw is supposed to be better.

Put it in a pillowcase, or tie up the ends of an old t-shirt. Put it in your pressure cooker and add water until the straw is covered with water (you'll have to weight the straw down with a plate or something.
Don't cover the pressure cooker, you're just using it as a huge pot.

Preheat your oven to 150-170 degrees. While it heats, warm up the pressure cooker on the stovetop. Just get it warm and then put the pot into the oven for an hour (don't think that leaving it in longer will help- it can actually hurt!).

After an hour, take the bag of straw out, strain it, and let the excess water drip out overnight (so the straw can cool).

For innoculation, mix the straw and cakes in a container (one of those rubbermaid tubs works well).. Store it in the rubbermaid/pressure cooker (always covered) or in one of those PF autoclave bag, whatever. Mix it up after a few days, then every two days after that.

Its pretty foolproof. The mycellium will look thin as it spreads, but it works great. You can just spread the colonized straw on the bottom of your terrarium and grow it like a giant cake. You should let it colonize in a fairly clean draft free area, but it doesn't need to be a sterile lab.

Thanks McMan, I probably would have thrown the water out if you hadn't reminded me of all the good nutrients in the H2O!
