New bluing Psilocybe from GA. (pics)

It has not been determined for certain by a professional mycologist that this Psilocybe is indeed a new species. Though I have a very confident feeling they are a newly discovered species of Pslocybe, one thing is almost for certain though, and that is it is a new Psilocybe for the state of GA. I am almost certain now that these are not Ps. atlantis, as many invitro culture attempts have not produced any sclerotia as I had hoped. Anyways, I just hate to say "hey look at the new Psilocybe I discovered" when no conclusive scientific research has been finalized. I felt I needed to specifically state that this may or may not be a known species of Psilocybe.

Had to go check my patch of the "probable new species" I have been finding here in GA. I hadn't been checking it much with the dry weather we've been having, but remy's report of a single Ps. weilii fruit in his patch propted me to go check. This "new" species of Psilocybe seems to mostly coincide with Ps. weilii's fruiting patterns, not all the time, but for the most part. This new species will fruit longer into the cold fall than Ps. weilii, and it doesn't like summer at all. It will make a very short and sparse appearance in the spring, go dormant all summer, and re-aapear with the peak weilii season in the fall, like now. Anyways, I found one single specimen while I was out there. I also spotted a few very small pins, so the next good rain should bring a nice solid first flush of these. I took a picture of this mushroom next to a quarter to remind people just how small these Psilocybes can be. They can get even smaller than this, I found one last spring that was about half the size of the specimen pictured below, it fit on my thumbnail! Hopefully there will be more to take pics of in the coming weeks, I need some fresh material to give to my Professor friend at the university to be freeze dried and sent to Guzman. Plus I'd like some frsh material to study, I am buying a microscope next week and am going to try and do a little ground work myself.

Damn LK, your camera takes some nice macro shots. Nice to see the new species again. Wish I was at home so we could go get some pics. I never did get to show you one of the 3 Chanterelle patches I found near the new species patch. Oh well, next summer I suppose.

How was the weilii patch near the new species doing? Anything?

Next time I'm home for the weekend I'll give ya a call and maybe we can go hunting.

Yeah, I really did lack in my hunting this year, I didn't get out there much at all. I know I missed some great opportunities to meet up and pick some chanterelles, but alas, there will always be next year. I've never slacked so bad on getitng out there and hunting, with work and some other things I've had going on I just haven't had the time like I used to.

The Ps. weilii patch next to the new species yielded nothing, nadda. It was kinda dry looking in that neighborhood, yellowy short cut grass. Hopefully things will moisten up here before it gets too cold.

Any promising looking fields you've prospected down there? I'll defintely have to get down there and hang out in your new town and check out some fields next spring. If we can find a producing field, I'm not affraid to ask permission, we'll have it made!


And yes, there has been many a many of bio-assays with this species. Its up there with the best of 'em, quite potent. There have been no chemical analysis performed, so I have no numbers to throw out there, but trust me, its potent :smile:

There's plenty of cow fields out here, I just don't know what to look for as far as a promising field goes(never hunted cubes before =\). But yeah, I'm way out in the middle of bumblefuck so there's plenty of cow fields. Some of them I can't even find the house where the owner lives, so I guess it's fair game if we stay away from the road. I hear the cops here are pretty hardcore so we'd just have to watch out and be descrete about it... like ninjas. :smile:

hi i found about 10 of them on my recent trip a few hours ago.. they were growing all around horse shit on the edge of a field with long grass growing over them... i live north scotland :smile: coolies

No, you did not find 10 of them. They do not grow from or near horse dung, and they do not grow in scotland. Just because 2 mushrooms look similar doesn't make them the same. Now, you may think what you found "looks" like what is pictured here, but its not. I could pull out 10 different pictures of this Psilocybe and none of them would appear to be the same species. What you found proably isn't even in the same genus.

They aren't always that small, its just a unique ability they have. They vary so widely its truely incredible! From 2" caps and 6"stems to what you see pictured above. Not to mention the physical morphalogical differences from one specimen to the next.

Awesome finds LK!

I believe I have seen those before, but dismissed them because of their definite non-Weilii characteristics.
I went hunting last night for hours with another shroomerite; didn't even find a single inactive. I'm thinking I'll have better luck in a few days.

I wouldn't doubt if there are alot more unknown P. species in the south than presently known.

OK, I have some open questions to Lizard and the mushroom experts here on the shroomery.

1. What does it take to achieve naming rights for a new species? Is there an international registery of plant and animal species?

2. Does it have to have a latin name?

3.(question for lizard) What will you name this "IF" it is indeed a new discovery.

4. (Off the topic a bit, but I've always been curious) Who discovered P. Weilii?

May I be so bold as to inquire as to what the substrate is that they were growing in? I tried to feel it out in one of the pictures but it could be in a few different habitats- (oh- I suppose I meant habitat Vs. substrate- oops! If I misssed something in the post that stated it previously then kick me in my ass. Very interested as is everyone.

I do have a detailed description write up of this species I have made and saved. I could post if interested.


The habitat is flood plain and also disturbed, the soil is sandy/loamy with patches of moss. No trees in the area at all, only tall weeds.

The reason I mention disturbed habitat is because this flood plain is also routinely disturbed by people in big trucks mud boggin and 4-wheelin.
