Ego loss and...
    #1872606 - 09/01/03 09:20 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I have read many posts touting the benefits of ego loss. Some of my earliest experience of ego loss involved alcohol (small doses really don't work, I recommend heroic doses to arrive at this level). What are your experiences of ego loss with alcohol and what benefits did you gain from it?

the closest thing to ego loss Ive ever had was on my first trip.. I thought I had died and I accepted death and trancended the darkness into the ethereal realm. It felt like my astral body expanded 10 times and in my mind I could feel the Universe around me for thousands of miles, and sense the broad abyss of the galaxy, with a sense of peace and calamity of mind like never before... then I opened my eyes and was like woa, where am i.. and then 10 seconds later" these are some good mushrooms". lessen learned: dont strive for ego loss on substances like alcohol, stick to mushrooms where you can have an equally enlightening experience, without all the health risks of heavy drinking. :spliff:

I think that "ego loss" is kind of a misnomer.

Heavy alcohol use may lead to liver-function-loss and money-loss and respect-loss; perhaps driver's license and job-loss, but that's about it.

Oh god, not too many good alcohol experiences. I don't drink often, and when I do drink (or did drink), I drank heavily. My nickname with all the punks was Pukey, and I rarely even drink.. I always end up having pictures or videos taken of me.

The most memorable time I had my picture taken while very drunk was when they took me into jail. hehe

No sense of judgement whatsoever. I was also on a lot of coke that weekend (don't worry, it was a once every two months thing, it was suspossed to be just for playing guitar, but then I was dragged to a party instead), and I had started drinking Northern Comfort, all sorts of other stuff, and I bought a half bottle of some chocalate liquor and was fucking slamming it. I was teetering on passing out. Then the cops showed up outside of the party and sat for awhile. After that, we left back to my friend's house, an apartment building.

So, I was all coked up (which wasn't the problem) and really really drunk. I was talking to one of the punks about mushrooms, and I decided we were going to go find a friend of mine so we could go to his house and look at my mushrooms growing. The cops pulled up as we were opening the door to the apartment building (right after I did my last line, thank god). So we turned around and ran back.

Then another very drunk punk was all like "I'll show you another way out". So we went out the other door, and there was a cop. BOOM!

They illegally searched me (hadn't done anything illegal, they didn't think I was drunk, thank god it was all that chocalate stuff, because they couldn't smell it on me), and they found my glass bowl. Off to jail!

We gave them the bitching of their lives, all the way their..

And I ended up getting $600 in fines. So I really won't drink anymore (and I never really fucking did!).

So, alcohol has never brought me ego loss, just the loss of my free will and the loss of my clean record... (thank God all the other stuff was wiped clean when I turned 18! including the $200 shoplifting fine I had never paid! fucking bastards never got that money out of me, at least..)
Peace.

Some things help me meditate, while others distract.  Alcohol is in the later group.  Even a little drink and I can no longer focus... well before I get drunk.  Ego loss and alcohol to not mix!

What are these benefits you speak of?

you're talking about a total loss of self confidence to the point where your perspective isn't clouded by your own bullshit?

I don't know. If one is to ingest a substance which disrupts their neurological processes to the point where he/she experiences ego loss (which can be done with alcohol - ask any cop who has found someone in such a chemical induced stupor), there are supposedly some benefits. I am looking for others who have expressed opinions about the positive effects of ego loss to tell me.

Ego loss is not the same as a 'chemical induced stupor'... at least in my experience.  Just because somebody is so drunk that they cannot remember their own name does not mean they have ego loss.

> you're talking about a total loss of self confidence to the point where your perspective isn't clouded by your own bullshit?

Drop the word confidence and I think you have a pretty good definition there.

Ego loss is like looking into a clean mirror and seeing your true reflection.  Normal life is like looking into a fun house mirror and seeing things tweaked out of alignment.  Drunk life is like looking into a mirror that you puked on while you were passed out.

Hehe, I remembered my own name, my acting abilites to make it appear that I wasn't drunk, and I also remembered my rights, and being searched because they believed an object in my pocket could have been a pipe, while I hadn't done anything illegal (that they could prove, at least to them I hadn't... no curfew, no driving violation, no driver's license to give them the absolute right anyways) to give them the right to search me on a suspicion. There are really some of them that do misuse their power... its sad.

Oh, I also remembered to give these fucking dicks all the fucking verbal abuse possible regarding my illegal search, and so on.. it was FUN!
Peace.

I would say that ego loss can very well be a component of a chemical induced stupor. If a person doesn't know his (or her) name and otherwise has no sense of self, hasn't he (or she) lost his (or her) ego?

Autonomous, I thought about mentioning something to that regard, that perhaps ANY situation can have some sort of spiritual connotation to that person, just depending on the way they think and what kind of situation can get them thinking..

We all react just a little bit differently.
Peace.
