#9 it was mention we would need SOME KIND OF SYSTEM (that is, different than the current one) to allow kids which are sick of school at 13-14, to go somewhere else and get useful work done that way.
What comes to mind is for instance the old guild system, where you could apprentice with a specialist and learn his trade. This could probably done at much earlier ages, and it was actually done for a long long time. Usually in the family business, but not always. I wish something like this would have been available for me back in high school, to learn my current craft. Would have saved a decade or two of unfulfilling paper shuffling both at school and my first couple of jobs.
See the work of John Taylor Gatto, an eminent award-winning teacher, who does NOT support this extended public schooling, keeping kids locked up in classrooms learning useless theory that's not relevant to them at the time, nor will it be relevant ever, because the system is way too standardized to be relevant for most students in it.
I support the idea of school until 13-14, then some sort of simple job or apprenticeship being at least available (which by the way is not all theory and simulation, but actual productive work experience) and then coming back to more schooling, later in life when you can actually use it.
There's a certain mix of practical experience and theory that goes into making an educated individual, and current education is way off towards the theoretical part, testing everything on paper. Useless.
Also, about sex and relationship from similar ages: the ancient Greeks had this happening in their society. Men, especially men of some stature and experience, were expected and encouraged to take a sort of teenage protege, and this was pretty much a two-way relationship. On one hand most people gain a lot from having young people around, as they have a lot of fresh energy and inquisitiveness, and on the other hand the young party needs the guidance, advice and experience of a developed competent adult, someone that's NOT their parent. Much more teaching gets done with people outside your immediate family, than with parents and siblings who have all sorts of vested interests and may not tell you the raw truth as it is. It was considered that if you've got all your shit together and you don't take anybody younger to instruct, you're not reaching your full potential as an individual, and not giving back to the society that instructed you.
