Re: Could i use JUST brown rice for substrate?

Werd keyzar,

I was considering using the 9r tek, however I was just a little confused on what he used for substrate, so he uses just brown rice out of the bag cooked right? so what do you do cook it and strain it then add some water to each jar and dump the strained shit in the jar till it fills up? or what?

I just got confused how he says in the 9r tek to:

Cook the rice according to the instructions on the package except for reducing the water to 1 1/2 cup water to 1 cup grain and leaving out the margarine/salt. Try a bite to see if it's fully cooked and tender. Then fluff and stir the grain, and spoon it into jars until full.

--- Ok i dont understand if you put 1 1/2 cup of water to 1 cup grain in a pan and cooking it , isn't some of the water going to evaporate? and wont that off the amount of water per cup of grain? and.. it just says 'spoon into jars' it doesnt say how much water to each jar..
help???

just brown rice and water would make a glue or paste i doubt that it would colonize fully you can just use brown rice not ground into flour just use the whole grains (ala 9er tek) in the grow/find section i personally think it is a great tek and i have done real well with it

keyzar it's right...
Vermiculite serves 2 pourposes:
- to keep the substrate airy and easy to colonize
- also it's used by the mycelium to fruit, if you use a whole grain tek to fruit cakes you're on the wrong way... or at least fruiting will be delayed and poor yelder....you need vermiculite for cakes...

Whole grain tek works best with casing
and for your lasts questions bout cooking just use common sense, if the rice get dry during cooking add some water.
i usually double the volume of the rice (2water/1rice)
When is cooked drain the water and use the rice as is, you don't need more water...
hope it helps

The "brown rice in a qt. jar" is tried and true. There are plenty of better ways, but before the PF tek was invented, this was probably the main method of those that didn't use whole rye grain spawn then case.

Yes, you can use pure rice flour for substrate. The most importent reason for Vermiculite is to level out the moister content. When work with any substrate of pure grain or flour, getting the water content right is very difficult. To much water, and you get bacteria problems, too little and you will not get proper colonization.
Also, when working with pure grain substrate, you have to be super stirilel. They contaminate much easier then normal rice/vermiculite mix
