Interesting justification for having kids * 4

There are a million reasons people justify having kids.  Most of them aren't good, IMO.  I heard a theory the other day that rang true to me.  This one isn't good either, but it rings true.  I heard it from, of all people, Steve-O.  He said that people are afraid of death and that they can only accept dying if they know that they leave a part of themselves behind.  In their subconscious mind, this makes them immortal.  So they're okay with dying, just as long as they know they're immortal.  If that makes sense. 

Sucks for them.  For those of us who have come to the understanding that we are one with everything and everyone, we have no need to leave something behind.  We already are everything that was, is and ever will be.  What do you think of Steve-O's theory?

Yeah, I believe this too. Same reason a lot of people want to make a mark in history or whatever.

It has merit to it. After all we are all immortal if the universe really does recycle everything - everything will repeat ad infinitum.

Leaving behind your specific gene code is just a process that keeps your genes in the current pool.

I take it for granted that the main reason people have kids is out of a desire for immortality. The delusion of immortality via genetic reproduction is a biological trick, one of many that pressure us into having and raising children. Sexual pleasure is another of many. I also get the impression that most people (not just women) have a hormonal "clock" that goes off around age 30 leading to an inexplicable but overwhelming desire to procreate.

Since he was addressing the reality of what some people believe it has infinitely more credibility than what you posted.  Here is some top shelf nonsense:

Yeah.  It just sucks that kids get born for the worst reasons.  In the case of Steve-O's theory, it's insecurity.

There are three reasons we do anything:

1. The reason we tell others
2. The reason we tell ourselves, and
3. The real reason.

The fact is that we are biologically programmed to procreate.  Any "reason" that someone gives for it is just the rationalization they have found that works for them.

P.S. When we die, we rot...that's about it.

This doesn't really hold much sway for me. It's narcissistic to believe the species needs your spawn in order to evolve and selfish to raise children according to the intent of "passing on your values", many of which are quickly rendered obsolete by the aging process coupled with the rapid shifts in culture and lifestyle that are presently occurring.

Yeah, but mostly women.  That definitely is true.  Women have that biological clock, where there's absolutely no justification.  They're just slaves to that impulse.

Why do you take everything to the extreme?  I think it would be great if fewer people had kids and I think it would be great if all parents had good reasoning for having kids.

I take your argument to its logical conclusion.  If you don't like the inevitable end of a logic stream you should examine your starting premise.  What would be your "good reason" for having kids?

No, that isn't true. We don't just rot. We get recycled by the universe. We are broken down into energy used by other forms of life - we continue the life cycle, dead or alive.

Wanting to keep the human race alive is just out of pure selfishness as a species... but hey, who can blame us.

To have someone to help with farmwork, and later look after you when you're old and dying.
