Crystal Kids * 2
    #1518184 - 05/03/03 09:22 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I was going through some old issues of Duprees(old mag. devoted to the Dead) today as I was cleaning(supposed to be) the attic. I came across a story by Jerilyn Brandelius that I had forgot about and thought some of you might get a kick out of. This same story is in a book too' but I forget the name.

Jerilyn Brandelius is a member of the inner Dead family. She is also the mother of 2 of Mickey Harts(drummer for the Dead) kids. Well to condence the story down, the band was playing at a west coast venue. As with all of the Dead kids (children of the band, crew, ext) they were playing backstage while the band was playing a show.
Being naturally curious kids they were going through peoples stuff. They came across a bag and found a vile of white powder in it. On the metal lid was a letter C. Thinking it was cocaine and they wanted to try it they dumped some out and snorted it. Well the C stood for crystal and they snorted some very pure crystal LSD.
When the kids were found they were totally freaking out and rolling around on the ground.
She doesn't give a lot of details of the experiance, but says after a long and frightening night they were fine. These kids were 12 and 13.
This happened in the seventys and the magazine is from 89 and she makes it a point to say that both kids grew up to be healthy ,smart, and very energetic.

If anyone would like to read her account check out the fall 89 issue of Duprees.
Mickey Hart talks about it in some book or interview and i'll try to figure out which one it is. Anyone else seen this?

I just thought you might get a kick out of this story. I wouldn't advise going out and thumbprinting your kids ,but there event turned out fine.
My kids will be a little older before I offer to give them LSD( and it won't be a line of crystal to snort).
I don't condone giving 12 year old kids drugs, but again it's a neat story.

Mickey used to dose his horse and dog and go riding around his ranch all day.

Those guys really liked their LSD

Yes I remember reading about that also.

He said sometimes after a really great show he would come home as the sun was coming up and of course he couldn't sleep. He'd dose his horse and dog and off they would ride out into the Marin countryside.

There is a book, in fact. It might not be the same one, but I'm reading and I found it interesting so far. It's by Carol Brightman. The title of the book is "Sweet Chaos: The Grateful Dead's American Adventure."

Chinacat, if you're reading this, check the book out and let me know how accurate it is. Thanks!

Remember those little orange microdots that crushed real easy?

I had some of those once and I was gonna eat a couple, but when I got the baggie out of my wallet, I found that my collection of microdots had been crushed to a fine powder, so I decided to snort that shit. I made a big line (I'm pretty sure it was around 3 or 4 microdots, cuz I origionally had 5 and only one of them hadn't been pulverized... I only used the dust, not the chunks.)

Man, that shit kicked in in like 10 minutes!!! Wore off really quick but it was INTENSE

highly recomended, if only there were still microdots around...

of course the kids getting dosed is not funny. i was refering to my own stupidity which rears its ugly head more often than i'd care to think about. but the story did have a happy ending as you saw.

i don't think kids should do drugs . . . or dogs or horses, for that matter.

edit: i'll just add here that one should probably take stories like these with a grain of salt. accidents happen but the dog and pony bit i just don't believe. 2 cents.

Have you seen "Tie-Dyed"?  Its a documentary made in the summer of 94 all about Dead heads.  the crew went on tour and just interviewed people it the lot...its a very cool movie.  Bit that same lady is interviewed and she tells that story.  If you haven't seen it, rent it now

I doubt Mickey Hart or his friends would make shit like that up.
Think about.

Its the sister. Its a decent read ,but with a skewed viewpoint.
She was a Berkely political woo-hoo in the 60's. She bashes the band several times for not taking a political stand in the 60's. She even takes a stab at Robert Hunter in an interview wich he nicely flips on her. Her viewpoint is that of a biased reporter and not a particapent.
