Where did pretend play go?
    #17981007 -

What happened to the days we would grab a chair leg and pretend we were working on a car or use a chicken nugget as a gun? Snort Pixie Stix's?

How about you expand on that? When does it happen, why, how?

there are a lot of demands in life and as we grow up we don't have as many of these demands fulfilled by others. instead we have to take on those roles a bit at a time. and as we take these responsibilities on, so to do we take on the functional roles of these responsibilities. it starts early with eating. we learn how to use a fork, a knife, a spoon. we learn what each is useful for and use it for that purpose. when first introduced to them, we might build towers or see which sticks on our nose the best, but as eating utensils become the low-man on the learning totem-pole, habit takes over. we use them for their purpose because such uses sustain more pressing matters. and by pressing I just mean cognitively demanding.

Sounds like a reasonable hypothesis. I thought the same, however never thought about functional fixedness playing a role. Good explanation.:awethumb:

Dungeons and dragons, other pen and pencil role playing games. LARPing comes to mind. People still do it, but...

dunno I was chopping wood and then I saw a branch that had a handle and for the next 30 minutes I was an Axis running through the house with an MP40

There's still pretend play.

I come on here and pretend I know what I'm talking about. It's great fun!

The school system destroys your imagination.

That, and apparently it's not "mature" to do so. If people saw me in my back yard fighting off dragons and demons with a stick and a pillow for a shield people would think I was either an energetic creative little dude, or a nutter depending on my age.

We are scared of what others think, we sheep like to keep each other in check.

That seems accurate.

One of the reasons I do most things alone and spent a lot of time alone wilderness backpacking. I wanted to play without feeling self conscious.

I play pretend quite frequently. Whenever I am tripping with all my trip buddies, we make a point to be extremely silly and make believe in magic whenever serendipity strikes.

I often escape my issues playing with knives on a decent amount of benzos and alcohol. Running around in the streets pretending i am Jason X.
