What's the big deal with 'Ego Loss?'
    #1793091 - 08/08/03 05:19 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Can somebody please explain rationally why 'Ego Loss' is necessary to become an 'Enlightened' individual?

If someone had total ego loss, would he not cease (mentally) to be an individual and be hampered in his ability to communicate with other individuals? A new born infant is without an ego, yet he craps and pisses all over himself and is unable to even care for himself in the most basic manner. Why is this a worthy goal? Should people in the most advanced stages of Alzheimer's be looked upon as spiritually advanced because they have lost their egos?

While you're at it, just what is an 'Enlightened' person?

Why do some individuals have such swollen egos that they think they can determine that others are not 'enlightened' and suggest to others to lose their egos?

But feeling better about oneself is the result of the ego.

It's all because that term is not correct. Ego loss does not correctly describe the state. What actually occurs is Ego detachment, or transcendence, when one realizes that ego is a seperate entity as consciousness, yet integrated within the physical experience. It is when you come to terms with it, and do not allow their to be any illusions between. This does not mean that one will have become enlightened..only temporary realized the duality of ego and spirit. They can slip back into illusion and think they are enlightened, but that is ego talking.

Thank you, that makes more sense.  You must be enlightened.

There are different levels of enlightenment. In a state of satori enlightenment, the ego (sense of self) can disapear. This is the realisation of oneness, not duality Shroomism. I don't think patients of alzhemimer's loose their ego. But I think infants are in a state of ego loss, yes. It can be a definate worthwhile experience and a refresher to the true nature of reality, and the labels that you put on it when you regain the ego. A spiritually efficientt person can rebuild their egos to become more happy and fullfilled individuals.

i would say that ego loss is a finite experience, not a perpetual state.

you can learn a lot from temporary ego loss, but the only way I know of to experience it forever is to discarnate forever

I know that duality makes up oneness. I just meant in a certain state of consiousness, you only realise the oneness.

I will try.

Based upon your usage of quotation marks around the terms 'Ego Loss' and 'Enlightened,' I believe it will be necessary to give a loose definition to these words before continuing on with the explanation.

I would consider an 'Enlightened' individual to be one who has learned something new, usually something of value.  And 'Ego Loss' I would consider to be a period of time in which one loses complete touch with one's Self and no longer thinks in terms of 'I' or 'you.'

I would not say that Ego Loss is necessary to become an Enlightened individual.  There are many paths to Enlightenment.  But Ego Loss definitely does result in an Enlightened Individual.

To lose touch with one's Self--to experience complete Ego Loss--is a very powerful thing.  It is extremely frightening, yet absolutely amazing at the same time, although these things are not really attributed to the experience until afterward.

And it is an intense learning experience.  One learns what it is like to not have an Ego for a certain period of time.  It is not just eye-opening.  It actually causes one to see the world through different eyes.

If you wouldn't call that becoming Enlightened, I don't know what is.

Peace,

RebelSteve

Ego itself is a product of the mind. The reason the mind created the ego was to provide security and survival. Basically, the ego is your mind's way of dealing with the external , material world. Even the internal world as well.

Consider this. There is Character, then there is Ego. Ego is based upon weak foundation. Character is based on strong foundation.

To explain ego is rather hard, but ego death, or transendence is NOT bad for the body as a living system.

Its hard to explain things on a message board. Books dont do justice either.

The only thing I can recommend as to truly gain insight into ego, and its destructive nature is perphaps meditation. Meditation daily bro - dont listen to all the mainstream hype about how to meditate, the benefits of meditation etc. Just sit down, and let your mind flow. Be attentive, and learn. Meditation has much to offer, its a useful tool.

So do people use the word 'ego' in the Freudian sense, as in the mediator between the id and superego?  Or are they using ego as a "sense of self" and the thinking that one's self is important?  My classes have used the word 'ego' in Freudian terms, it is really confusing to see it used differently, and to talk about it being shattered doesn't make much sense   In what everyone who talks about ego-loss talks about, it sounds more like the superego is shatterring, not the ego, Freudianly speaking.  m-w.com:
Quote:

superego:  parental conscience and the rules of society, and functions to reward and punish through a system of moral attitudes, conscience, and a sense of guilt

it sounds like people are talking about realizing this^ part of themselves when they mention ego-shatterring.

Aldous Huxley wrote the book Point Counter Point, I think this applies to almost every philosophy or standpoint outhere. What one believes in and sees as right doesn't mean an other equally experienced and knowlegdeable person agrees with your thoughts on the different matters.
I think this is where you practice the loss of ego best. All things are alike to a certain degree and merge into one.
