Keep in mind, Ripper killed himself on chat ten years ago. Many costly DDOS attacks have stemmed from chat. The quality was sub-par. It was problematic.

The bottom line is that it's the admin's site...they get to decide what they want to support and what they don't.  They've made their decision.

all i did was instill a sense of rationality in the chat members.
and then nature took its course.


it took me quite a few bans to get my point across to the members of the chat.
but all in all, it seems i have succeeded.

cervantes: i'm very aware of the issues that stemmed from IRC, and was active in IRC for several of them.

the quality of this chat implementation was also sub-par, and we could foresee it being just as problematic in the future as IRC if left to its own devices.

For real.  There was a bias against chat from the start. The people who voted against it weren't at all interested in a constructive solution. Are these really the type of people that should be holding positions of responsibility? I've always thought leaders should be open to discussion, constructive suggestions and solving problems rather than putting bandaids on them.

I completely agree. It is worth fixing IMO. But without proper liasons to The Staff, chat can not be properly explained.

If The Shroomery can't control the quality of chat with their staff, killing it is a valid option.

It's much more difficult to moderate chat because it's real time - there needs to be a moderator sitting there reading all chat messages in all the rooms.

With the forum a moderator can log in once a day and moderate effectively.

I'd rather they suck it up and breed a chat staff that is up to standards. But we need quality folks online 24-7. That is a tall order.

And there were usually chat mods in chat 24/7. I was almost never the only mod in the room. I've never found it difficult to moderate chat, it was never a problem dealing with issues and I never once had to administer anything more than a warning or a kick. :shrug:

it was not started by the moderators, but by the administrators who saw a problem forming.


we discussed it and voted on it. it had been in discussion for some time before it was ever truly asked if we should get rid of it. again, i'm really sorry that you are unhappy with our decision and that you cannot handle the loss of the small modicum of power you had over other members, but that is not my problem.

there has been an alternate Shroomery IRC since the sponsored IRC was disabled. you are welcome to go there if you want or you can make your own chat.


as far as being professional, it wasn't my decision--i didn't have an opinion in chat, but it seems others did, so there you go. you have been the one throwing blame and judgement on anyone in this thread who disagrees with you from the start. that, my friend, is highly unprofessional.



the issue had been discussed for weeks, and options were weight both FOR and AGAINST chat. the cons outweighed the pros. we DID try and figure out solutions to fix it and could not see any that would work long-term.

Don't accuse others of ignorant assumptions if you're going to do the same thing yourself. I don't think any chat ops are upset about chat being removed because they want power over other people, but rather because they and MANY MANY other users found a lot of enjoyment and benefit out of using the service.
