I think they can provoke interesting discussions, at least. Religion means different things to different people, and it's at its worst when people are mutually excluded. Discussing and understanding our differences is valuable.

These arguments aren't futile, it's a well established fact that debate is done for the nonparticipating audience. If having discourse about the beginning of time and the universe is futile than what the hell isn't?

Your whole post was a facepalm and your arguments are invalid.

Yes it is, because even if you agree, you aren't going to come to any final conclusion.

Not true, I came upon a thread with a very good food recipe and I found it pretty damn useful. Saying that all the threads aren't useful is ignorant and makes one look like a fool.

These arguments are futile, because people will read them, but will soon forget and move on. There is no greater lesson than experience itself.

This is why I consider Christ's teachings so important: he preaches the abolition of religious establishmentarianism and the unlimited virtue of self-sacrifice in the pursuit of higher realization. Many Christians are slaves to their culture's rituals, and this is what Christ is trying to lead us away from. The agnostics have been healed, but many of the irredeemable have taken up the reins of the church. The followers of new-age fads still need help, and they may or may not find it. We are all seeking liberation and a life in the presence of God. Some of us are doing better than others.

there are other Abrahamic religions that promote the dispersion and empowerment of religion, with a demonstrated unity through various acts. i think you can guess what I'm getting at. you have good points. i've always believed people are their own worst enemy when it comes to matters of faith. we dont have to live ascetic lifestyles in order to worship- the primary mechanism of worship, a priori to everything else, is belief and acknowledgement. i have yet to meet a humble atheist, though anecdotal, i think it signifies a much larger theme.

That's preposterous, of course I come to a final conclusion, it's just not a different one than what I already had.

You know what, agreed. I have changed my mind upon the discovery of this gem, much to the dismay of your ridiculous assertion that I wouldn't come to a conclusion and your implication that nobody would change their mind.

That's not always true and it's a childishly rash assumption to make. Somebody might read this who has never considered an oscillating universe before and will never forget it. Obviously that's how I know about it, it's not an original theory of mine.

I would answer this if it were, ya know, a correctly worded English sentence. Try not to feel like a clown when you reread it.

This is part of what I was getting at earlier-- the Western Crusaders bringing "democracy" to the East have no idea that the Islamic democracy wears the mask of theocracy. You'd think the Iranian Revolution, and the ensuing democratic theocracy, would have taught us a lesson but it didn't. There's no reasoning with the Islamists because our democracy makes no place for God. Our translators are rendered useless by the cultural taboo upon public religious expression. For the same taboo our theologians have grown complacent and the public face of our religion (and with it, our democratic government itself) has been co-opted by the worst among us, the shirks. I have found that it is not possible to communicate in universalistic terms. We have become islands of mutually unintelligible value systems scattered across a sea of moral relativism. We stand atop the Tower of Babel and the confusion is imminent.

I consider myself "Christian", even though my parents raised me agnostic, even though I don't go to any church, because I recognize, appreciate, and try to understand the impact of Christian teachings upon my morals. The "Christians" I generally hear about on the news are sadistic Christ-killers. Many more that I don't hear about are doing good.

And I agree with you about the atheists. Reductionistic scientism and materialism, yay! :flowstone:

I was a Christian a while back, I was in a similar position as you describe. Then I read Mohammad Asad's (formally known as Leopold Weiss, a Jewish convert) translation of the Qur'an. the rest is history

I may want to check this out, but I gotta admit, the condition of the middle east in general does not inspire me with confidence in Islam's capacity for conflict resolution. I of course realize I'm seeing the circumstances through America-tinged glasses, but I feel like I have a choice here:

1) America (as the promised land of the Christian puritans) had regional disputes at its outset. These were solved in two extremely bloody but self-limiting wars. All three of the factions now live at peace and America remains Christian (whatever that means).

2) Islam (the nation constituted by the religious identity) had regional disputes at its outset. These were quickly (and I understand often bloodlessly) resolved. Over a millenium later its geography was carved into vassal puppet-dictatorships by imperialists and a sliver of it was permanently settled by the Jewish diaspora. This resulted in an ongoing self-exacerbating sectarian bloodbath among religious extremists who occasionally get the dosh together to fly airliners into American skyscrapers.

Again, I realize that my perspective is probably skewed, and I acknowledge that Turkey and Indonesia are doing pretty well for themselves while Iran poses a serious intellectual and political challenge to western/Christian values. But in Arabia, religious police might kick my ass for not having a beard or failing to wear a burqa. How is that better than our lackadaisical practice of Christian tolerance and modesty?

first and foremost, please dont consider Islam as an Arab religion. No one on this earth represents Islam for what it truly is. Not only that, conflict in the ME is based on Arab traditionalism and their antique ways of thinking. Islam's primary component of understanding is reason. Reason precedes all else. For without reason, understanding will never follow. I strive to practice Islam, but I am so far from where I should be. I dont tell people I dont know I'm Muslim because I dont want anyone confusing Islam with my own faults.

I always had problems understanding the tripartite theory of God. Human as God, etc. Islam is the most misunderstood religion on earth- especially by Arabs. If you are interested in learning something new, look up Mohammad Asad's translation, look into Mu'tazila tradition, look up rationality in Islam- ibn Sina, Averroes, and for that special mystical connection- al Ghazalli. The state of Islam in this world now is pathetic, and any honest Muslim will tell you this.

We love Christ, he has the same ontological status as Mohammad (peace be upon him), humans are all equal including prophets that God sent.

My background is in science and I used to think Islam was a joke. Here i am now, proclaiming my faith in Islam. I tell you honestly, do your homework and be patient. The benefit is worth the work

It's certainly an Arabic religion if nothing else. The Quran isn't even permitted translations, only "interpretations" in other languages. That said, I know about the Islamic golden age and its advancement of science and learning, how it preserved the classics, so I can't pretend I'm not curious about its relationship with the theology. I realize I have a lot to learn. Thanks for the recommendations.:thumbup:

Germany, the UK, and many other countries have a high presence of Islam, both from immigration and conversion. Germany will be a Muslim country within 10 years at the current rates of change in population surveys.

From a western perspective it is surprising to believe that something we've stigmatized so greatly is being woven into our society, especially seeing gringo white people as Muslims. A lot of sheiks piss me and my (Arab) Muslim friends off, especially with their pre-historic ways, and exclusivist claims on the Qur'an and what the proper way to interpret Islam. One of the great things is that there is no central unified religious institution, no central authority (except for shi'a, shi'ite).

The problem with the middle east is that these are dictorial regimes that were placed into their positions by the west during the 20s through today. Islam is no better off in the middle east (as is Christianity) then here in the west. Conflicts there have everything to do with regional and political issues, and nothing to do with actual religious issues- what is done in the name of religion, any religion for that matter, is exclusive to the actual belief system.

I've always been on the "no greater purpose" band wagon, but lately I've been thinking... It actually doesn't make since to think we're here for nothing. With all the shit going on in space and existence, it doesn't seem plausible that we're here for ourselves. I mean, I know some people are fated for more than others, and I feel like those people pull reality towards them kinda.. Like have you ever had coincidences happen where you were like "Damn, what are the odds of that happening as I'm doing this?" or w/e, well some people, including me have that happen to them daily, while others feel totally insignificant. I know we as humans can't conceive reality since our surroundings labjldksj;ladg I'm done with this post, its late, goodnite guys!
