Does Faulkner count?
Pretty much my favorite quote from "The Sound and the Fury"

“...I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire [a watch]...I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all of your breath trying to conquer it. Because no battle is ever won he said. They are not even fought. The field only reveals to man his own folly and despair, and victory is an illusion of philosophers and fools.”
― William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury

Interesting how much this quote and Jack Londons quote posted by the poster before me resonate. Its all about evolution, and when you are consciously living your life to evolve with and AS nature, there are no victories. Sure you may reproduce, sure you may assure that you live on through your children, even that you will be remembered for years to come, but the only thing alive in this world are the patterns that we live by, the fractal nature that births us and takes us away like fruiting bodies from mycellium.
Much love and light
Namaste

Maurice by E.M. Forster was VERY good and I think would appeal to the shroomery crowd. Written in 1913, not published until 1971, it's also a relatively short read.

To the Lighhouse
by Virginia Woolf was great from a analytical standpoint. Not something I would consider pleasure reading by a long shot, but is still a great work.

Would John Steinbeck fit into this category? Or is the 30's too late to be considered early American.

Boring, dull and classicaly cliche, I have to go with Mark Twain. While he is an easy and popular choice, my reasons for liking his writing is he had a particular sense of humor that many other writers of his time and even before his time, lacked. All the while still being able to write about the realities of early American life around him.

No one asked about your stuck up view of Steinbeck, so keep it to yourself. I love Twain, but even if I didn't I wouldn't talk shit about him right after someone else posted about him.
