favorite dead album?

I just started listening to the grateful dead and i only have american beauty. reallllly good cd, what is your favorite dead cd? i need suggestions :gd_icon:

Studio album? My favorite used to be Workingman's Dead, but as of the last few weeks I've really been digging Blues for Allah. As far as live album... well there are many many many shows that I love, but in terms of a live album that you can buy in a store, I'd say the Terrapin Station box set (from some show in 1990, I think)...

anything by :gd_icon: is fine by me!

i prefer live as well but my favorite studio album is Wake Of The Flood. if your looking for some good live ones check out some of the Dick's Picks collection.

the first album (grateful dead) totaly rocks
workinmans dead - rocks
aoxomoxoa rocks too.

any of these three at first, or you could just get Skeletons from the closet which is a 'so called' best of. but thier never could be a 'best of' unless it included every version of every song they've played live. Eventualy you will be getting into the live shows. so then i suggest LIve at the fillmore 2-11-69. That's a pretty good show.

I would have to agree, as far as studio albums go at least. They're both so different yet so utterly amazing. Workingman's Dead is up there on my list too.

For some reason I don't own that album and don't think I've every heard it straight through, I really need to buy it. I'm actually pretty sure I haven't heard a couple of those songs... atleast not uless they were live.

Yeah that's an alnum every Dead fan should have.

But Anthem gives me shivers.  I listened to it on a very heavy acid trip on headphones in the middle of the woods on a perfect summer day.  And that album just aided in my melting into oblivion.  I swore it was going in circles.

Can anyone reccomend a show or a CD, besides Long Strange Trip, that has a good "Doin' that rag" on it? Its not on ANY of Dicks Picks!?

american beauty was my first album....thats the one that really got me curios and the first one i listened to on acid after i had some more albums...but this one does hold a special place in my heart along with the show i was at.

but i havent heard a whole lot of the studio albums...i got AB, Terrapin Station, Greatest Hits : skeletons in the closet or something, and  aoxomoxoa is my other favorite one of those.

I get my first check form my new job tomorrow so im gonna see if i can get workingmans dead....ive had lots of reccomendations. But im getiing my broadband back so i can download some while i save ot money to buy the stuff that deserves to get bought.

ohh yeah i have that one too....that ones is wierd. Im gonna have to stick it up in my playlist priority.

oh and i forgot i have dicks picks 1, postcards of the hanging, live dead, and dead set along with the essential live download shows leftover from last year when i had broadband. And the shroomery volume 2.

my favorite studio album is definitely Anthem of the Sun. words can't describe how deep of a trip i went on listening to that album, with 2 of my closest buddys, a 1/4 sheet of blotter and a bag of dank  :thumbup: everytime i hear that album again i sware i start to feel a slight flashback coming on :eyemouth:

That's not a fair question!

But my favorite studio albums are:

Terrapin Station
Workingman's Dead
American Beauty
Wake of the Flood
Blues for Allah

It's so hard because some of those albums are kind of hit and miss. Some amazing earth shattering songs and some cheesy Donna shit. :P Probably the strongest overall with consistenly good songs imo are Working man's and American Beauty though.

eh. I appreciate what he did with them and am sad about what happened to him but his style definitely isn't my favorite.  I could do without listening to his songs. There is just something trite about many  rock keyboardists' music that just rubs me the wrong way and makes me cringe a little bit.....now if John Medeski ever played with the Dead....holy shit! :laugh:
