Straw Logs in plastic tubing

My friend recently purchased some of the plastic tubing so that he could try one of those straw log teks he saw over at mycotopia.
http://www.mycotopia.net/discus/messages/2/24584.html?1050544454
He bought some plastic tubing, and plans to innoc with some WBS. The plastic is 12" diameter, has anyone ever made a straw log like this sucessfuly with tubing that large of a diameter?
Would it be too risky trying logs like that, or should my friend order up something of a smaller diameter tubing?
Any input would be greatly apreciated, thanks!

I believe the now reccomended diameter is 12 inches. It is less prone to drying out than 10 inches.

If you feel like its too much, just use higher spawn ratios.

Thanks bong, and MrMaddHatter.. I guess you guys are right. I suppose my friend could have gone with that same recommendation by Stamets...but he just wanted to get some feedback from the community.

If Stamets says do it, THEN DO IT! Screw what the community thinks! JUST KIDDING!! You did the right thing. Never underestimate the power of a question. Take it easy and good luck.

12 inches is a good diameter, so go for it.

How about those Food Saver bag rolls? I don't know how cheap they are, but they have them at Wally World now.

Nevermind. I looked at them closer and I don't think they would work that well. I would like to find a source as well. I have never seen anything like this before.

I just found this site which looks interesting. They have the 12" in 1-3 mil. The 2 mil is $88, but it is also 3000' long! They also have all kinds of poly bags that look like they might work for some kind of spawn bag or something for real cheap too.

you can use plastic sheeting, but don't use that to make logs.
plastic sheeting cut into large squares can be drawn up and twisted into a *straw wheel*.
check out shroomQT's posts in the original straw log thread in this forum.
4 mil is pretty thick stuff, you could definitely get away with 3, maybe even 2mil if cost is an issue.

thanks for the posts guys.... Hmmm i just dont know if its worth it..... 66.50 is pretty cheap, but if i dont like the straw log tek, then im stuck with 2200' of tubing.... :\
has anyone else tried this tek? is it worth it? what makes it so attractive to me, is the fact that u dont need a fruiting chamber for it.... i can still do my dung projects, and have the added bonus of a straw log...... with no loss of space in my terrarium... yay

ahh, with shipping those rolls of tubing come out to like 80+ dollars, i shopped around, and they all cost that much...
but i found a good alternative..... Gusseted bags.... they come in all kinds of sizes.... the ones i was lookin at were about 37in long, 16in wide, and 14, in deep.... it may not be a perfect "log" but its a cheaper alternative to buying a huge roll of that poly stuff... the large ones will run around 40-60$ for 250 bags
Hmmm they look ALOT like "mycobags" :\

thats exactly what im gonna do.... i have some 1mil dropcloth and that shit is just fine to use.... its cheap-o too..... i just need to get a 3' piece of pipe with 12'' diamater.... it dont need to be exact... i was thinkin of makin somethin out of copper tubing... stretch the plastic across it, then tape it up wiht packing tape.... just as long as its strong enuff to pack the straw into, im ok... and packing tape is pretty damn strong.... so is duct tape......

That definitely sounds promising hyp, good luck bro. Keep us updated when your doing this (I know my friend will too), we can use some people in the community making use of straw logs!
