Parents = God
    #1707337 - 07/11/03 10:01 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I just finished reading Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk today, and in the book he mentioned that our parents are like god to us, they give us life, we always seek their approval etc. there were more things in there but I thought that it was an interesting point, that we look at our parents as god-like (though more in child hood)

anyways, just thought I'd through the idea out there. comments anyone?

/me writes in notebook: "must read Invisible monsters.....by chuck palahniuk."

as for me, i've never seen my parents as godlike at any age, but they basically determine your foundation. If you'd like to know what your emotional basis is.....look at your parents. but dont look too long or you'll turn into a pillar of salt...heh....them bieng god and all. i'll just shet up.

well, if everything is god (something I'd like to think) then you parents would be the most comforting, traditional god-like role of god.

ooo, no. that doesnt jive with me. I want my god to be perfect. And he must have muscles like Atlas. That is unless of course you mean the more idealized archetypal form of parent. Then, i'd agree whole-heartedly.

Yes, parents should indeed represent God to a young child. Ideally, a harmonic convergence of both feminine and masculine, which 'God' is in one being...integrated.

I'm not the expert on that.. but doesn't it usually work out that one assumes the role as more feminine and one is more masculine?

this was a big beef I had with my lesbian women & religion teacher last semester..... she always insinuated that men and women had the same essence and that a true "partnership" was one of equality in every respect, which I just don't agree with.

well by god, I mean in that in the least literal way possible, they are god to you when you are a child in the sense that they control alot of your life, and that we look to them for guidance and protection, and comfort, much like god.

get me?

Then you shouldn't have titled it Parents = God.

The = sign implies equality, in the most literal way possible.

the = sign is just shorthand for the title, so you have an idea of what the post is about, without having to read much

if you had read my post you might know that. :smirk:

I think you're right. When you're younger parents may as well be your Gods.

I think we believe the idea that "God" would reject us because of the times we felt rejected by our parents.

One of the most liberating days of our life is when we realize that our parents aren't Gods. Then we begin to think for ourselves, and make our own decisions.

yes, but it's also a very disapointing day when you realize that the people you so looked up to aren't as perfect as you thought they were, this might also be why so many people don't believe in god, because their god models let them down. Palahniuk also adresses this in Fight Club.

No. The most liberating day of our life is when we realize that we are all one with God.

I think the job of a parent should be to see to it that their child survives in their environment better than the parent did.

unfortunately, while this is going on, there are these pricks controling every aspect of our environment, which makes it hard to raise a kid as your own nowadays..
