Animal Torture

In 1999, sleep researchers at the University of Chicago put rats in a device consisting of a large bucket with an inverted flower pot in the middle. Then the bucket is filled with water to just below the edge of the flower pot. The rat is placed on the inverted flower pot that is just barely big enough for the rat to stand on.

Then they waited. Whenever the rat started falling asleep, it would fall off the flower pot into the water and clamber back on the flower pot. Over and over for days this torture continues. The rats consistently died from lack of sleep after 11 days.

Now, I'm not usually squeamish about animal research for medical purposes as long as the animal's suffering is minimized. If you have to break its leg to research a new bone-mending medicine and it's done with anesthetics, fine. I don't like it, but I know its for the greater good. And if the animal doesn't feel pain, it's hard to argue against the greater good.

But I have a really hard time accepting these sleep deprivation experiments. They've also been done on higher animals including dogs and cats. Can you imagine being in that situation for 11 days until you die from an inability to sleep? And the poor animal isn't smart enough to even understand what's happening to it. Why it feels so horrible and nothing seems to make it better. It must be like being tortured while tripping so hard that you're not sure what's going on.

Anyone see things differently? Am I just letting my feelings get in the way of rationally judging these experiments? I almost want to cry when I see these rats undergoing this torture.

I agree.

Unfortunately it seems the majority opinion is that animals are a lesser form of life and as such don't deserve the same protections.

This always baffled me when I was growing up catholic - how a catholic (or any christian for that matter) could support stuff like that - the answer I always got was the passage from the bible mentioning "Man has dominion over animals".

I don't see why we can't use christians in these experiments. Kills two birds with one stone and all.

And it's not like it's was the first time it was done, these idiots that do this kind of stuff need spanked, hard, daily till they can no longer sit.
