How the hell do i kill all the mold in my basement

So, i have like, a hundred year old house, and in that house is a basement. It has an old school brick floor, that has just rotted away, allowing water and dirt to just seep up from under the houses foundation.

the end result, is probably a toxic mess of mold, mildew, and i just found a dead rat body.....
it smells pretty bad down there, to the point where it is seeping up into the house. I just went down there with a dust mask and some gloves, but now i think ill need a respirator for anything longer than a minute.

its particularily bad right now because temperatures for growth are perfect for mold and fungus right now (as many of us know) and there has been a lot of rain lately.

so, my question to you, is HOW DO I KILL EVERYTHING, mold mildew, etc.

I was thinking that id just get a few gallons of bleach and put it in my fertilizer sprayer and go nuts, then hit the floor with a shop vac after it dries...... but any other ideas are welcome.

I never had a basement, but dehumidifiers come to mind.  In addition to your method of attack, you need to keep the place dry.

yeah, i just put a fan over the window leading to the outside, and am venting it as we speak, I have negative airflow from the house to the outside through the basement, so that should help after a day. it really needs some permanent ventilation which I will put in.

And the basement is probably a few hundred square feet, it would take gallons of bleach, which im willing to do. Im also worried that there might be naturally present ammonia compounds present in some of the old degraded ammonia, or rat piss or something, that might be present in a quantity that could potentially create enough poisonous gas to kill me..... probably not likely, but fungus and mold produce interesting compounds sometimes....

And get charged out the ass? :lol: Its a pretty massive job you'd be undertaking, any permenant solution would require a decent amount of construction work.

Yeah, i plan to eventually re-brick the basement, or atleast pour a liner over it. I have friends and family in the construction business. They have buckets and buckets of left over latex floor liner i could just coat the whole fucking thing in. I'll do that eventually.

Right now, im looking for a stop gap measure, that will be effective enough to get me through the wet humid season we have going on here.

I would bleach the living fuck out of the entire basement, floor, walls, roof, inside everything. Then get like 100 gallons of silicone and do the whole floor with it so nothing can seep in.

Thats what the latex would be for, and I literally do have access to close to a hundred gallons, just pour and squeegee across the floor. BAM permanent liner.

I'm in the same situation.  Actually, my basement has some kind of mold growing that gives me severe allergic dermatitis, not fun.  I tried bleach, the mold will regrow quickly if the humidity persists; the bleach only works for a day or two.

Negative pressure ventilation definitely helps, dehumidifiers cost lots of $ in electricity (it's like an air conditioner running most of the time).  I found the key solution to be eliminating the source of the moisture as much as possible; in my case, building a berm around the perimeter of the house, about 3 feet from the foundation.  Also check gutter downspouts, I had to extend two because they were draining too close and the water was going straight down into the basement.  Best of luck to ya.

LOLOL, I dont have gutters, and the driveway slopes towards my house where shit just pours into the basement. There is one large part of the basement that is like an open cavity.

There was a foundation wall built, because i presume the old wall (2 feet deeper into the house) failed, so someone just cinderblocked it up. But, you can still see it if you look over the wall, through the gap in the rafters.

I only once got a look in there, when i took a camera and put it through the rafters and took a picture, not a pretty sight.

I really need to get a concrete coring machine, and bore a hole into the cavern from the driveway, and back fill it.

but once again, i dont have that kind of $$$$$

fuck it, im going to go get a few tyvek suits, and a respirator with some high end filters and just own this bitch. Im definately going to be wearing my nice ass snowboarding goggles too :smile:

Spray it with bleach scrub and bring the temp to 170 f. Keep it there for 8 hours. Also monitor the temp so as not to burn your house down

I had to do a major mold remediation including replacement of a good portion of the structure on one of my rentals, ran tens of thousands of dollars when all was said and done. :frown:

But a lot of that expense had to do with the fact that this had occurred from a leak on the 2nd story bathtub that went unnoticed for years, and so we had to cut out a lot of the wood framing and complete replace it.

My first advice to you is to definitely wear a respirator.  You don't want that shit making a home in your lungs.  I met a park ranger up at Crater Lake in Oregon who can't walk more than 50 feet at a time without breaking, because of severe damage his lungs incurred from working in a moldy basement for the parks department only two years prior.  Spend the $25-$35 to get a solid P100 niosh approved respirator mask and make sure you get a snug fit when you're wearing it.  It's not comfortable, but it's worth it to protect yourself.

Other than that, you seem to have it under control.  Vent humid air, dry the place out, bleach it, sand away or replace any severely compromised porous products (like wood).  You can buy Fosters 40-20 fungicidal paint to help encapsulate any walls or ceilings, though if you do a good job on the initial remediation, regular old priming paint would probably be fine (and much less expensive) for a protective top layer.  The floor liner is also a good idea if you don't want to go replacing the whole thing.

yeah, Im afraid that its likely that a fair amount of my house has serious structural damage from dry rot to the floorboards,

Its sagging in quite a few places, and has been getting somewhat more noticeable (or so it seems)

there are quite a few structural supports laid into the floor. Theyre the ones that are 1.5 inch, with a swiveling top base to support the foundation. I think ill need a few more of those at the least.

ahh the joys of home ownership. I might just have to sell this bitch someday.


on another note, ive been venting my basement to the outside of the house, while I have a fan blowing fresh air into the upstairs bedroom of mine. I just realized that the shit is just circulating back in thanks to the local winds. FML, time to move the fan
