computer virus hell
    #2941514 - 07/29/04 06:54 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all,

I was never really a pub regular, and I haven't posted in a while, but I hope someone here can help me out.

I've got some kind of virus/spybot on my computer that I can't seem to kill. At the moment I'm using Trend Micro's virus scanner, AdAware and NoAdware to clean my system, but none of them can find the problem. Internet Explorer switched it's homepage to " res://ldyll.dll/index.html#28129 " every time it's closed, and every time I open it I get loads of pop-ups advertising pop up blockers. I once heard about something called "windows messenger" and that that can be used to cause such problems. If anyone can offer me any help, I'd be most grateful. Sorry, I know the pub isn't the best place for this kinda thing, but I didn't know where else to go!

Thanks all,

-Odium

You probably have some spyware on your computer. Be sure that you are update your adaware then boot into safe mode (f8 on bootup) and have it scan you computer a couple times.

Go here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html and I think they have a hijacker removal tool there.

Science/technology forum maybe?
And get rid of Internet Explorer which is the worst browser I've ever experienced. Get www.opera.no

IE has tons of security holes, I suggest switching to a better browser like Firefox. Download Adaware and run a thorough scan. You might want to try Spybot as well. You might have to reboot your computer in safe mode to get rid of some infected files. If you use Windows, download the latest security patches.

I had this same problem, but with a different homepage. It took me a while to fix it but I haven't had any problems since switching to Firefox. I also use a free firewall (Sygate) and a free virus scanner (Avast).

If you take the time to take preventative measures now, it will save you a lot of time in the future.

NOAdware sounds bogus - keep in mind there are dozens upon dozens of fake spyware cleaners. Stick with the king & queens: spybot & ad-aware. Also, try CWShredder from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html - CWShredder is amazing.

yeah, and stop using IE. Firefox or Opera - no substitutes.

as far as Windows Messenger is concerned, here's how to disable it (although this is not the problem you are encountering. Seems like you just have a browser hijack, but everyone should disable messenger anyways): start>run>type "services.msc" w/o quotations, scroll down to Messenger. Right click>properties>disable. Restart.

Here is a good site on other good service tweaks: http://www.blackviper.com - these will fill in security holes and reduce startup time and memory usesage.
