The lack of Death Anxiety threads lately

What's up with that? Is that a sign that everyone's shields are running at full operational functioning, with no problems? As in...isn't there anyone pointing out DA anymore?

Maybe this guy is taking a bit of a break from his usual duties of scaring the innocent, the guilty, the ignorant and the wise all at once.

Well I had a lot to do with the glut of threads awhile back. I was seeing how well the ideas held water in debate and I was still working out the details and coming to terms with the concepts emotionally within myself.

I'm purty much convinced now.  I'm not very invested now as to if others accept it or not.  And I like to watch others debate the issue without my input from time to time.

I'm still hungry for more Death Anxiety topics. :laugh:

As of late, I've been reading what other people have done with Becker's work and their interpretations. All of these people are part of the Ernest Becker Foundation. I've checked out Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death by Irvin Yalom who comes from a Existential Psychoanalysis background, and Lack and Transcendence by David Loy who looks at how Existentialism, Psychotherapy, and Buddhism view Death Anxiety. Just about an hour ago, I received Tranference and Transcendence in the mail. It was written by Daniel Liechty who actually works at a local University and is the Vice President of the Ernest Becker foundation. I've only read the preface so far, but I think I'm going to like it. The other two that I mentioned were pretty good though.

Irvin called his book Staring at the Sun because he compares facing your mortality to staring at the sun: you can only do it for so long. His book was interesting as he tries to use philosophical underpinnings and promotes healthy habits as a way to over come the terror of mortality. David Loy's book Lack and Transcendence tries to show how Buddhism, Existentialism, and Psychotherapy have been fundamentally concerned with the problem of Death Anxiety for a long time. He comes from a Buddhist background and says how the Buddha pointed out that there is an inherent "lack" (which he obviously calls lack) in people's lives that they aren't good enough, and that they want to be grounded forever in the present (their attempt to transcend); but the Buddha pointed out that we are groundless and impermanent -- All of our desire for afterlives and immortality are just humans attempting to have their needs met and to feel grounded in a groundless universe. We project higher spiritual realms to compensate for the uncomfortableness in this world. The only complaint I have about Loy's book is that it's thick and dense, like Denial of Death. Not necessarily in just subject matter, but in the the sheer amount of information that's packed into a page. In both Loy and Becker's books, I sometimes had to read a page more than once to fully grasp the idea. hah

Time to overcome some anxieties again ?
You know these anxieties are all in our imagination ?
So I'm still convinced overcoming them, not pushing away or ignoring them, is a very possible way to walk.
Learning how to overcome regular anxieties will teach one to treat DA as well.
I not feel much touched by the topic anymore anyhow.

Of course, its your very own brain being the real threat.

Im not sure what i fear more anymore, death or insanity. I think i would prefer death over hell within my mind, if i am even able to comprehend that i will die if my brain starts going the wrong direction.

How's this for DA: A few months ago I bought The Denial of Death, but I decided to re-read all of Carlos Castaneda, a Buddhism text, and then a novel (one of my fav series) before confronting Becker. Still reading Carlos atm. :lol:

The threads about DA have been making me think of moments where I've had it. I would say drug use is the biggest one. When my mind is placed in a completely new mode of being, it tends to worry about either the suffering of all life or death.
