Ridiculous?  I have a brother-in-law who, as a kid, lived with his Mormon family, mom, dad & 14 siblings, in a boxcar.  An eighty year old living today could have been born in a California jungle camp for agricultural workers.

As usual, the problems of your brother-in-laws child hood are the result of incompetence on his family's part - not oppression by the state or corporations.  Its not a result of unfair minimum wage.  Minimum wage is not now and never has been intended to subsidize mormon's unsustainable religious beliefs.

An eighty year old could have?  So what?  My dad grew up with no electricity in a desert dwelling.  2 rooms, 7 siblings, cotton pickers, typical story.  What does that have to do with today's minimum wage?  What does that have to do with splitting a one bedroom apartment?

Your claims are a ridiculous fantasy with no basis in reality.  Far beyond what even most self proclaimed lefties would ever make.

I don't know what kind of life you think you're entitled to live with a minimum wage job, but I've been very poor before, and there have been times when living alone in a two bedroom apt and spending $20 a day on food would have been living the high-life for me.

I still feel reckless and irresponsible when I spend $20/day on food more than a couple times a month...  And I still haven't entertained the idea of an entire extra room in my apartment.

New Deal relief saved people's lives, especially the lives of infant children.  Why didn't the Depression Era conservatives step up their charity and save these lives?  Why didn't the moral wealthy people step up their charity and save these lives?  Why didn't the major religions step up their charity and save these lives?  Why did it take relief from the federal government to save lives?  Was it morally wrong, Un-American, and Socialist-therefore-evil for the US government to save lives?  Are malnourished dead babies more American and more free than alive babies who depended on the government for bread and cheese?

DieCommie, you know, I really didn't provide enough information for you to feel justified in your conclusions.  Nevertheless, you seem to think desperately poor kids should die of malnutrition or work 16 hour days  in sweat shops and the government with it's meddlesome, anti-freedom labor standards, regulations, and laws, with its pernicious health care and diabolical food stamps, should butt the hell out of the sacred machinations of the Free Market.  If minimum wage were a living wage, fewer government handouts would be needed; or, if Americans were so broadly good and charitable, we wouldn't have the history of suffering I referenced.  If you cannot understand these connections, I do not know how to make them clearer to you.

 no it doesn't even exist. We're all waiting for fucking Wall Street idiots to get their houses re modeled so we can bid a little extra on our contracts

I never said or implied anything of the sort.  You are just making things up.

My claims throughout the whole thread have been - Its not unreasonable to require a roommate with only one min. wage earner.  It is unreasonable to expect a 2 bd rm with only one min wage earner.  It is unreasonable to expect to live in the highest rent areas like San Fran or Manhattan on min. wage.  It is unreasonable to think you can eat whatever you like and not have to prepare your own meals on min. wage.  It is unreasonable to expect min. wage to support a family of 16.

Pretty simple, not extreme at all and nothing like what you are claiming.

not extreme at all? you claimed a person shouldn't live on $20 a day to eat. Do you realize that $20 doesn't really cook you 3 huge thanks giving turkey dinners right?

Anyway this is getting childish. We are arguing about food. But really, preventing people from eating? I find that a bit extreme. I'd imagine an African who hunts and kills and cooks a deer or whatever is the equivalent could eat better in one day then I would eating raman noodles. If you want to nit pick over things like a t.v., videos, video games, a nice car, whatever. But food? Gee gosh. Oh well, remind me not to participate in this thread any more. I can't imagine this being any more oriented towards children if we continue to argue, about food

Yes it does.  You dont think $20 could buy a thanksgiving turkey for three?  Of course it can.  ProTip:  Dont go to boston market.  Buy your turkey, potatos and vegtable fresh and actually take the time to cook it.

Most people eat less than $20 worth of food a day.  Do you go out to eat every day?  Its real easy to eat well on less than $20 a day if you take the time to plan and prepare.  Here is another ProTip; You mention Ramen noodles a couple times.  Those individual packs you can buy with the bullion included are instant noodles that are more expensive and less nutritious than real noodles.  Instant Ramen is for people who are short on time, not short on money.  If you are short on money you should buy and cook real noodles.

Man, I see what it is with you. You just don't like losing, you'll just keep dragging this on and on just because you are right. NEWS FLASH, A TURKEY IS EXPENSIVE. With $20, do you think that you can buy a turkey, and have a lot of money left to prepare the turkey very well?

Anyway, you are just arguing now to not let go of something. You must have me confused with an over consumer. Go pray to your precious government that subsidizes farms uselessly. Since you want to speak of waste, what do you think of that? Subsidizing a farm, that would grow food, for people to eat. Something much more important then the wasteful spending someone would spend on a house by buying it for $500,000. Do you find the necessary? Mr. "you can prepare a thanks giving turkey for under $20 with the vegetables and the stuffing and all"??

Do you find buying un necessary things like jewelry, a very expensive convertible car, first class plane tickets, as waste ful as eating what you claim is "whatever you want"? You talk about me spending $30 a day on food as though it's necessary for the benefit of society

Do you find other things more waste ful then buying expensive food? Does buying expensive food pollute the environment? Let's bring that up, what if I don't want to drive a car, or take a bus, because it pollutes the environment. But where I work is too far to bike to every day. Should I just lay down and not care about the conditions I live in? You claim creating your own future and not expecting society to just give you something is a much faster way of earning what you truly deserve. How the fuck is how much I spend on food waste ful?

What are you babbling about for? Is this going to turn into a convo about welfare, food stamps, waste ful spending that somehow raises the deficit because I don't live next to a costco and cook expensively? man those meals totaling over $20 a day really fucking add up

waste social spending if I've ever seen it  cause of the deficit......... somehow

You seem to misunderstand the meaning of the word "minimum"...if you're making minimum wage, you should be living minimally...

Living minimally means surviving...not living comfortably...not having a spare room and a diet of whatever you deem optimal...It means having shelter from the weather, and enough nutrition to survive...If you want to live better than that, you'll have to get a job that pays more...

There is no reason to desire poverty and hardship for others--there's only dumb animal appreciation and acceptance of hierarchy.  There's no reason people who work at jobs that employers want done--food served, bedpans emptied, shelves stocked, bathrooms mopped, children supervised, etc.--there's no reason for people doing honest work, 40 hours per week, to get so little pay they and their families suffer.  There's no reason they shouldn't be paid wages that meet their needs and provide for their comfort and happiness.  They should able to afford a house, utilities, groceries, healthy food, healthcare, a decent education, and vacation; and they ought not to have to work more than 40 hours per week to afford these things so they can raise children and have leisure.  That should be the minimum wage.  No reason it should be less, dumb fucking sadist status quo supporters aside.

You're missing the point of minimum wage...minimum wage isn't for people with children...it isn't for people with houses...it's for people who live with their parents...

If you make minimum wage, you shouldn't be thinking about moving out...you should be thinking about getting a better job...

Like it or not, the market has a need for unskilled workers.  Those unskilled workers bring less to the table than a skilled worker...so they should be paid less.  By raising the minimum wage, it doesn't make anything more affordable for those workers...it just makes everything cost more.

You clearly don't understand the concept of scarcity.  Simply put, not everyone can have a comfortable life...That can only happen in a dream world...

You have passion, but being passionately ignorant is even worse than being passively ignorant...

You can't name one society where scarcity isn't a problem.  The only such societies were hunter/gatherer societies of low population located in particularly abundant locations...

Today, the population is too high to have anything like that.  Call me delusional if you want, but you're living in a fairy tale.

Suffer?  Is living in an apartment suffering now?

Your expectations are simply too high to be sustainable.

There is plenty of reason.  The earth simply cant support it.  You are just making up a standard of living off the top of your head without consideration to actual economics and resources.  Scientific studies have been done and the general conclusion is that if everyone had the average american lifestyle it would take something like 3 or 4 earths to support.

Your expectations are too high and not sustainable.  The earth and working population simply cant give what you expect.

Jesus man that is one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard. There is no way that idea will ever be feasible or realistic I guess though that is what the left truly wants to live in a fairy tale land in which everything is perfect and to hell with how the real world works.

Really?  How then is your extravagant delusion sustained?  How do monkeys commonly fly around the world in airplanes?  What is this floating, man-made city of pleasure seekers called a cruise ship?  How do monkeys eat locally out-of-season fruit, or mid-continent monkeys eat seafood? How do monkeys live in buildings over 1000 ft above the ground?  I can go on and on.  How do these real things comport with your delusions of scarcity and unsustainability?

The very few live like that because the rest live in one room mud shacks and eat bugs...

If you redistributed all of the wealth evenly across the world, the vast majority of americans would have a much, much lower standard of living...
