Yeah, one of the magical things about money is it fuels a sort of society-organizing algorithm...the people who are most important to the economy are the only ones who can afford to live in the places where the most economically important people should be.  This isn't the 1800's, there's not enough free space for everyone to live wherever they want.

These claims are almost like a ridiculous strawman that a libertarian would put up against his socialist opponent.  "What do you expect, min. wage to pay for a 2 bedroom apt in San Fran and you can eat whatever you like?"  Yes, they do expect that....

Ridiculous?  I have a brother-in-law who, as a kid, lived with his Mormon family, mom, dad & 14 siblings, in a boxcar.  An eighty year old living today could have been born in a California jungle camp for agricultural workers.  Minimum wage isn't only for teenagers and adults without dependent children.  As low as it is now, it was instituted to help prevent the undignified, degrading, miserable, exploitative poverty that actually existed in this country.  It's an easy slippery slope back to the nastiness that was life here not 100 years ago.  People lived like that then, people exploited desperate workers at starvation & shanty camp and potato soup levels of subsistence back then, and people are no different now then they've ever been-- it's a slippery slope and teabaggers have decided to strap on their skis, it's time again for depression era America.  Have they really convinced you that 16 hours a day at $7.25 is acceptable, dignified way for the Shell Station or Publix to compensate people who serve you?

Actually, I'm completely against any minimum wage.  Let the free market rule.  Supply and demand will dictate wages better than government bureaucracy ever could.

So you don't even think people who work their ass off and make minimum wage should even be allowed to pay rent and own their own place? What type of communist are you? Your name is mis leading.

It's almost as if floor workers are ants to you. That is a very disrespectful view of society, I am honestly offended. If you don't like freedom of speech, and the fact that Americans have the right to complain to wish for better living conditions, you are free to move to a socialist country, out side of the U.S.

Sorry I don't get a chance to go to Costco every day, I said where I shop, places like winn dixie and publix, and when I'm up North Albertsons.

 having a minimum wage job doesn't entitle you to eat whatever you want? Does having a minimum wage job entitle you to eat at all? If I didn't know any better, I'd think this thread was a joke or something. You are living on a lawyers salary telling me that working my ass off all day doesn't entitle me to eat thing I enjoy? Ok let's put it this way. If I work for minimum wage, and DON'T pay rent, I'm usually making at least $50 a day, in which case I can usually live on $30 a day, and in that case I can even out once a day.

Enlil the lawyer, in charge of peoples rights, one way or another. Maybe I should change my entire life style to fit your view of me. Or maybe it's true what they say about you in OTD, either way, I'm wondering what type of LAWYER would say I should eat off less then $10 a day, even if I work my ass off. If you believe a floor worker shouldn't even be able to eat good food after working his ass off all day, then maybe you aren't really all about democracy at all. There are of course other places people like you could live, perhaps places claiming to have the rights that the U.S. has, but obviously just because of a little coup clearly doesn't:

"The politics of Egypt is based on republicanism, with a semi-presidential system of government. Following the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, and the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, executive power was assumed by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which dissolved the parliament, and suspended the constitution.
In 2012, presidential elections resulted in the election of Mohammed Morsi as Egypt's fifth President."

Maybe you'd enjoy it better there
Are you one of those people who think that the American Indians deserve to live on reservations and have rights only equal to their status on a reservation? Funny enough, indians currently, are the richest people in the U.S., or at least they should be

You seem to think I'm a rich man...I make $62k a year and have student loans of more than $150k...you do the math...

My wife, as a secretary, makes more than I do...

Yes, I have to be careful with my money, and I keep track of what things cost...when something is on sale at one market, I go there for it...otherwise, I go to another market...This is how someone makes money go further...

I don't cry because I live in a two bedroom house instead of a 5 bedroom...just like I didn't cry when I could only afford to sleep on a couch of someone else's house...

If you work hard and have some talent, you will rise above minimum wage in this country.  The more you think that society owes you something, the less effective you will be at earning it for yourself.

As it stands, I don't believe a person who starts out brand new at a company should make over minimum wage. However, a person working at a company for 20 years still making minimum wage, is pathetic. If you do that much for the company, you deserve better compensation. And don't act as though it never happens. Some people are compensated, some are not.

Is me complaining about it going to change the conditions? Not necessarily. But it's my right to complain about it.

it's not as though I entirely disagree with you. I wish occupational licenses were not such a pain to obtain. Well a license isn't a pain to obtain, but often times finding someone who will allow you to occupy their territory, or lot I should say, is difficult. In which case people could always sell what they want, and make as much as they feel they worked for, in self commission.

Would there be a problem if every time someone walked down the street, there was a sales cart in front of everyone's house, with people that looked more like beggars instead of hard workers? Perhaps. But in such a case, perhaps it'd be easier to get loans if such a scenario existed, where one wanted to take it more seriously and actually set up a store front instead of just working off the side walk. In either case I have more then enough respect for anyone that wants to run their own business, and assume all the risks. Pioneering is what made this country great. I honestly believe that.

I may agree, none the less many people believe in dedication to a company, even one that's basically used the worker to wipe their own ass with the entire persons career there. I disagree with keeping the same job at the same wage, but in some ways admire people, who, even if ass ignorantly, are dedicated to a company. These people may not have brains. Do I blame them for being stupid? Not really

Why should a dedicated servant be treated like shit? I know lazy maids that get paid more then people who work for wall mart their whole life. Yet as stupid as people remain, I disagree with using someone to wipe my ass with, just because they own a company. Oh, how I some times wish the world was a place where people used their brain, and decided not to get stepped on by people over a few crumbs tossed off the dinner table. Yet it's not. But in current times of recession, people are looking for any job they can get. So really many people are stuck with wall mart jobs. It's kind of pathetic.

In certain scenarios I agree, a person who works minimum wage should not really be able to afford everything they want. Those jobs suck, and people should move on. But in other scenarios I understand when no one else will hire you, you take the first crap thing you can find. It really really sucks. I mean working at wall mart isn't so bad. But getting fired from your well paying 30k a year job and having to take the next piece of crap job you can find, surely sucks.

I agree, people making minimum wage should have to live in multi-family boxcars and jungle camp tents.

My father who is a landlord tells the same thing I said to potential applicants all the time, they can not afford to live by themselves, some listen and take his advice, others get pissed off.

I have relatives in the depression years that rented rooms in their homes to basically strangers, they shared the same bathrooms and used the same kitchen, and slept in rooms next to each other. There was no shame in living like this, sure it was inconvenient and there was a lack of privacy, but it was necessary due to the economic situation of both parties.

You see there was no government "safety nets" back then, people had to survive on their own, and you know what? They survived anyway, and did not end up in "jungle camps".

So ... tell me if I understand you correctly ... understanding American history as you do, you accept the legitimacy of the free market society in which employers paid desperately poor workers poverty wages for hard agricultural work and required them (if they wanted work at all) to live in company provided,  on-site, bunk houses, and to buy all their provisions and necessities from the on-site company store, effectively recouping most of their paltry wages.  See, I don't value that kind of freedom, the freedom to exploit people who are suffering hard times, to treat people like shit.  Is this the quality of contemporary conservative values?  We ought to have fairh in the Free Market, ungoverned by people (as if people have no responsibility for their own systemic functioning), whatever the result, even if, as proven by history, it is known to undermine traditional human and religious values including justice, equity, compassion, charity, and human dignity--is this your faith?
