Leary's experiential typewriter
    #1641637 - 06/18/03 06:42 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone have information about the "experiential typewriter" that Leary and Alpert used at Harvard?
The best description I have found is this:

http://www.deadmedia.org/notes/5/053.html

But it doesn't say much about how the device was actually used.

I think it's an interesting idea to try to communicate trip experiences in real time without using ordinary language. I wonder what could be done with modern technology?

That is interesting. But wouldn't sitting at a typewriter modify the flow of a trip? Similar to the "no observation without interfering with the observed" rule of physics.

Maybe tape recording is a better way to do it? Have you ever tried?

Although this isn't the same thing, it reminds me of Maynard (from Tool).  I went to the Tool concert last time they were in Houston and a few of my girlfriends friends had back stage passes (But none for us because they found out we were going to late. :mad2:)  Anyway she said once they got back there, Maynard was dressed up in his leathers (S&M stuff), and sitting at a computer.  Across from his computer was another and the only way he would communicate with people was through them.  Basically a two way chat between him and whoever.  He asked them if they wanted to go with him and be beaten, but they declined.  He is an admirer of Leary and I wonder if that has anything to do with this.
