The traditional family
    #16178643 -

If sex could being simulated through robots, virtual reality or some other form that resembles real sex in a %100 authentic way, do you think people will bother having real human sexual partners anymore?

If spawn could also be created in a lab, kind of like creating a video game character, will this also remove the need to form a functional family unit?

Will these two things together be the death of the traditional primate spawn pool? Would removing the need for a mating game be a good thing that will elevate us above the rest of those damn dirty apes/animals, once and for all, freeing us from many of the oppressive chains of natures hurls over us, preventing it from exercising its complete and utter domination over our lives?

Would society dramatically change once the idea of finding a mate is not everyones top priority, i.e less competitive in nature, no one giving a shit about physical appearance or their views on controversial topics etc, people only driving fancy sports cars because they actually like them, not because they want to fuck girls younger than their daughters?

If one were to get their sexual gratification from virtual reality, their perfect little monkey premade in a lab, why would someone choose have a 'relationship' with anyone? For example, a household of three best friends could raise their offspring together, get their sexual gratification from a robot/virtual reality and use each other for communal/social/family unit needs. Why would one need or want the strict sole sexual/emotional partner anymore?

Does anyone really want a traditional partner for anything more than sexual gratification and the chance at rearing your own perfect offspring? Would not it be better just to remain friends with humans, or do people really enjoy the bullshit ups and downs of the 'relationship' experience?

Do these traditional families only exist out of necessity to our biological drives, designed to play within the rules of nature, or is being a part of the nuclear family actually desired for reasons beyond sex and spawn?

Personally, I doubt it. I believe there is a good reason for the husband being the #1 suspect when some dumb bitch gets found floating face down in a river covered in stab wounds.

Being with another human can be about more than sex. Being with another human can be having a companion in life.

Why would someone choose to have a relationship with anyone if they could fuck a robot?

So they could have someone to wake up next to.

So they can have someone to see the world with.

So they can have someone to be there when things aren't going as planned.

I could probably think of a few more... but they'd all be just as baseless.

You can still having meaningful relationships with humans, why complicate them with sex and physical attraction when you could a perfected version from an outside source?

You could still be best friends with a wonderful beautiful girl could you not? Hell you could even raise a perfect little lab child with her. Just avoid the sex and the obvious psychotic drama that seems to come hand in hand with human sexual relationships.

Reality is, waking up to your sexual partner is not always pleasant despite the lies romantic comedys and walt disney have sold to you.

Well... if it's virtual reality then would it be like masterbation today?

About the relationship experience, I think that some people get lucky and actually like their partner, but most are usually emotionally detached (i.e 50% of married couples today). It's hard to answer really :shrug:

Unfortunately as most of us know masturbation is not a substitute for sexual intercourse.  It just doesn't satisfy the biological drive for breeding like traditional sex does. Prostitution is also no substitute, as it would not be the perfect sexual encounter craved as it comes with emotional and financial baggage.

I am saying in theory if we could match sex %100 and children could be designed like a doll, we would not require a 'relationship' or 'sexual partner', would we still want a traditional family unit?

its already happening

in fact the 'traditional' has been different for a long time in say Nepal where polygamy is practiced.

I'm 30 and most of my friends are the same age or a bit older, most of them are choosing not to have families. Some of them are paired up with others, some are serialy monogomous. some have open relationships.

I believe we all desire intamcy, with or without it being sexual. that can be found most easily with a partnership of some sort, whether it be best friend, lover, spouse, or whatever way you want to make it.

I don't think there is an innate desire for children, just sex. Children are a way of finding meaning in this absurd world.

once you have children i think there may be innate things that come out in response, however

Why would you want to omit sex?

I don't, it is just at the moment there is really no market alternatives apart from prostitutes, porn and mastubation which are not close enough to the sexual parter experience. Once we can replicate that, along with creating children, why even bother with having a tradtional family? You could still enjoy close relationship with people, but why bother with the whole 'sexual relationship'?

Maybe your sexual drives are linked heavily to emotion and you need a real human partner, I don't know. That is your answer you need to decide for yourself. That is the question presented to you. I am gathering from your answer you can only have inimate experiences with someone who is a seuxal partner and it has to be based around sex?

I know I would be happy with a few very close inimate friendships if I could get higher quality sex outside of being in a sexual relationship with a human. The costs of freedom within the tradional family unit are just not worth it to me.

For the record I am happily in a relationship and have been for 8 years. We have lived together for 7 of those years and I spend everyday with her.

We can replicate the kids and the sex, but that wouldn't be the same as the whole experience. That would be like saying that acting out two threads in the plot of a play by William Shakespeare could represent the whole thing.

O for a Muse of fire, that would ascend
The brightest heaven of invention,
A kingdom for a stage, princes to act
And monarchs to behold the swelling scene!
Then should the warlike Harry, like himself,
Assume the port of Mars; and at his heels,
Leash'd in like hounds, should famine, sword and fire
Crouch for employment. But pardon, and gentles all,
The flat unraised spirits that have dared
On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth
So great an object: can this cockpit hold
The vasty fields of France? or may we cram
Within this wooden O the very casques
That did affright the air at Agincourt?
O, pardon! since a crooked figure may
Attest in little place a million;
And let us, ciphers to this great accompt,
On your imaginary forces work.
Suppose within the girdle of these walls
Are now confined two mighty monarchies,
Whose high upreared and abutting fronts
The perilous narrow ocean parts asunder:
Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts;
Into a thousand parts divide on man,
And make imaginary puissance;
Think when we talk of horses, that you see them
Printing their proud hoofs i' the receiving earth;
For 'tis your thoughts that now must deck our kings,
Carry them here and there; jumping o'er times,
Turning the accomplishment of many years
Into an hour-glass: for the which supply,
Admit me Chorus to this history;
Who prologue-like your humble patience pray,
Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play.

Not many can be a solitary bird.

The conditions of a solitary bird are five: First, that it flies to the highest point. Second, that it does not seek after company, not even its own kind. Third, that it aims its beak to the wind. Fourth, that it has no definite color. Fifth, that it sings very sweetly. (John of the Cross: Sayings of Light and Love)

Well if we are playing the hypothetical technological Utopian future game...

What if we reach the level of technology to where we can transplant our brains into robots that allow us to modify our aesthetics to our liking, and that have superhuman qualities such as vastly increased strength, speed, and durability. By this time we will also be selectively choosing the genetics of spawn and growing them in labs so as to create hyper intelligent and mentally healthy brains for the next generation. By this point we would probably just be growing the brains without the rest of the body which is now obsolete.

Transhumanism FTW!

You mean it doesn't have constant negative thought patterns that need to be projected onto other birds to help soothe it's inner turmoil?

Sounds to me like being a solarity bird shits all over the rest of humanity.

I disagree, but I really hope you enjoy your fantasy of having a traditional family or partner. I am sure being married will bring you great joy and happiness.

Indeed, I think there is a chance of a future in which human experience can match up a little better to our heroic expectations.
